    Isotretinoin and Hair Loss

Apr 28, 2006/by William Rassman, M.D./5 /Drugs (Cause Hair Loss), Female Hair Loss

Hello! I am a 24 year old female who is experiencing hair loss from isotretinoin, and was wondering what I can possibly do to help my hair stop falling out. I’ve been of the medication for a month now, and my hair started falling out about 2 months ago. I’ve now lost about half of my hair, and I’m really worried because it hasn’t slowed! My dermatoligist said there’s nothing that can be done except wait it out. I also know how freakish it’s going to look when it starts coming back in. I had long, blond, thick hair and now it’s so thin and starting to be noticeable. I tried Rogaine- used 4 bottles in 3 weeks and it didn’t seem to help. I just bought Nioxin shampoo/conditioner to try- I am desperate! Is there anything I can do- vitamins I can take, treatments, shampoo- that will help? Thank you so much!

Oh, I was on a very high dose, over 3 mg/kg of body weight; I figure that’s why I’m having this side effect.

Unfortunately, some people do experience temporary hair loss from isotretinoin. Taking a multi-vitamin may help. I agree with your dermatologist that there is not much that you can do right now and that you must wait it out. However, you might want to have blood work done to rule out other causes of hair loss for women like hypothyroidism, anemia, crash diet, contraceptive pills, and dermatitis.

Hello! I am a 43-year old female who is at the breaking point due to extreme hair loss/thinning. I was diagnosed with lupus 2 years ago and have been getting kenalog 40 injections every 6 weeks since being diagnosed. I have been taking sinemet for restless leg syndrome for about a year. I completed 6 months of accutane in Feb. ’07 and, also, in Feb., I had my hair chemically processed 6 times in a 10-hour period. Now my hair which was incredibly THICK and healthy has been falling out in massive amounts! I can see my scalp! Washing my hair has become traumatic because of the incredible amounts of hair that come out. My lupus doctor assures me that neither the kenalog 40 or the sinement is causing the hair loss. My dermatologist agrees but doesn’t think it’s caused by the accutane either. I recently had blood work done and everything looked “normal.” My dermatolgist suggests that I get steroid shots into the scalp to help with the hair loss. Should I do this? Is it safe? Will it make my hair regrow? Will anything help make my hair return to its former thick, wavy, self? I’m trying VERY hard to not stress but it seems to be consuming my every waking moment and now I seem to be incorporating my hair loss into my dreams. Needless to say, I’m desperate for some valid advice and some honesty on whether this is permanent or temporary. PLEASE HELP!

      Hi
My son, at age 18 an International Model, had an acne flair up, the doctor prescribed accutane, after about 3-4 months on the product, his acne cleared up, but we’d noticed his beautiful long blond hair, starting to thin during this time. He is now 20 and has almost no hair on the top of his head going toward the back. The sides are so very thin too. His career took a serious dive. We were given no warning as to the severity of the side effects of this drug and he was not even give an alternative medicine when he went to the Dermatologist. Is there anything we can do?

It’s been recommended to take a multivitamin. Don’t. Accutane (isotrenoin) comes from vitamin A, so if you take too much vit.A during your treatment health issues will arise. Look it up before you start taking any supplements!
