We’re taking a week off from posting new content — our first break in almost 6 years — so we’re using this opportunity to repost some older articles that didn’t get the attention they deserved the first time around. NOTE: The following comes to us from a longtime reader that wishes to remain anonymous. He’s gifted us with some insightful posts in the past about the FDA, LLLT, and clinical trial regulations. His email is as follows: — The Journal of Sexual Medicine recently published an article that has been the source of several […]
Snippet from the article: Read the full story at BBC — Baldness drug Propecia ‘risking men’s sexual health’ I always worry when a single case is put forth as a typical example of a problem. I do not doubt this young man could’ve seen some side effects, but I would think that this is a […]
I sympathize that what you are telling me is what you may be experiencing, however, from a medical/scientific perspective it does not all fit. You do not notice immediate thinning after stopping Propecia in one week! Propecia or saw palmetto or any other herb or medication will not completely halt hair loss. Decreased libido may […]
Generally when you stop Propecia, the side effects disappear in a matter of days/weeks. Along with stopping the side effects, the value of the drug and all of its benefits will produce “catch up” hair loss, which means that your hair loss status will go back to what you had before you started the drug […]
Both Propecia and Proscar have the exact same active medication: finasteride. The only difference is the dosage. You should not be seeing these drastic changes, especially after one week! It doesn’t make sense to me. Did you have your hair mapped for miniaturization before changing pills and again after making the change to see if […]
Those two medications work in similar ways, so I would expect the side effects should be similar. In fact, dutasteride is a stronger drug with a longer half-life, so if you experienced side effects from finasteride I would have to assume you’d see them with dutasteride… perhaps even to a greater degree and taking more […]
I really do not have a clear answer to your situation. In general, Propecia or Avodart will not be as effective on your front and temple areas. They each work best on the top/crown areas of your scalp. I do not know if you will have more or less shedding as everyone has different results, […]
I really do not see your logic. I mostly see your fear… fear that the drug can give you side effects. Is it worth the risk (for you)? Maybe you should question taking it altogether. There is a phenomenon known as the placebo effect… and it goes both ways. If you are preoccupied that a […]
I’m glad the medication has been successful in maintaining your hair and I’m also pleased that you enjoy the site. I really appreciate emails like yours (we all like a pat on the back once in a while), so thank you for your kind words.
If half the dose of Propecia works, you will get about 80% of the value of the drug, on average. That may be enough to accomplish your goals. You can try increasing the dosage up over time, but I really don’t want to give dosing recommendations for someone that isn’t my patient. This is a […]
I hope you enjoy the book, and I’m glad you find this site useful… but I am afraid that I have no good news for you. Those few patients who have sexual side effects or breast pain and/or enlargement that persist after numerous attempts to restart their drug program, will continue with the same outcome. […]
No. Exercise won’t increase or decrease side effects if you happen to get them. No. Exercise won’t mess with the effectiveness of finasteride. Get your iron checked and be under the care of a good doctor. I don’t see any value in trying to make finasteride work better, though. Finasteride works well in young men, […]
I’ve not heard anything from my patients nor have I read anything in the medical literature about finasteride (Propecia) effecting the voice. There’s one young reader that sends me questions through this site from time to time suspecting his speech was altered by Propecia, but I have no way to verify that it was the […]
You should take 1mg of Propecia (per your doctor’s prescription) and if you develop side effects, you can cut the dose… but going the other way makes no sense. 99% of people do not get sexual side effects addressing sexual performance. Why would you assume you are in the 1% group of the population?
