As the person who pioneered FUE, it is now the most popular hair transplant done worldwide. The birth control pills have been known to cause hair loss in some women. Speak with your doctor about the type of pill he has you on.
Every surgery causes scarring. In a hair transplant, there are two types of scars: (1) the strip scar which is a linear scar from an incision in the back of your head, and (2) an FUE scar which is very small punctate scars less than 1mm each. Most young men we perform a hair transplant on want FUE because they don’t want a “line” scar. I had three hair transplants with an incision (strip) method and no one can find my scars. Each time I had the procedure, the previous scar was removed. I happen to also be a very good healer. If any doctor tells you that his surgery will not produce a scar, he is not telling you the truth and may only be trying to tell you a bill of goods. I have been practicing medicine for 27 years, and since the drug was released in the mid-1990s, I have prescribed it thousands of times. In my practice experience, I have never seen this syndrome among the people who got the prescription from me, but since I became aware of this a few years ago, I inform every patient of this risk. Even if the risk is very, very low, for the man who gets it, the risk is 100% and is tragic.

I am a 20 year old Indian male with Norwood 2- Norwood 3 hair loss. As per blood tests, my DHT levels are 1410 which is twice of normal range (250-990). My dermatologist usually prescribes Finasteride 1-mg, but has recommended taking Dutasteride 0.5-mg instead due to unusually high DHT. She said this is for cases like mine. My question is this: what is the difference between Finasteride 1-mg and Dutasteride 0.5-mg in terms of efficacy and potential side effects? Have you ever recommended Dutasteride ? Trials indicate it is far more potent than finasteride.
Finasteride is probably safer than Dutasteride which is known to cause sterility in young men. I never pay attention to the DHT levels as I don’t believe it makes any difference in my initial recommendations.
As the bald spot appears to still have some hair, it may be the beginning of early genetic balding. I recommend you see a doctor who can perform miniaturization studies in the hair around the bald spot. This will help determine if there is early miniaturization present.

It sounds like you are one of the 2-4% who are sexually sensitive to Finasteride. You may find that continued use will cause more problems. Speak to your doctor.
I hope that you are not under the age of 25. Men who have hair transplants at, for example, age 21 will most likely continue to bald which means that the area behind the transplant will also bald. Then, if you transplant that area at age 22, the area behind it may also go, so that will require a third hair transplant. This can continue year by year, putting you in a difficult situation. If, however, you are over age 25-26, then it gets less likely that the balding will go fast behind the hair transplant. This surgery looks good, but I am talking not about the surgery; I am talking about you and your age.

That is fascinating but it prompts a few thoughts. Why not use body hair for transplant processes? And why does the balding gene only impact on the top of the head and not the sides?
The sides of the hairline, as well as the 3 inch section at the bottom of the back of the head, is immune from genetic hair loss. Body hair can be used for hair transplants but it has a short growing cycle so if you transplant 100 body hairs, only half will be growing at any one time while the others are in the telogen (sleep) phase. This means that you generally only receive half the value when body hair is transplanted compared to scalp hair.

I suspect that you were not balding and do not have the genes for balding.
Severe illnesses can cause hair loss. If you are not prone to genetic balding, then your hair may grow back.

Scarring is the result of two things: (1) the size of the instrument used and (2) the healing properties of your scalp. Clearly, the surgeon only has control of #1.
