Maturing Hairline and a Widow’s Peak
I have never had a perfectly straight hairline and I have always had a widows peak. I recently noticed that my temples have receded just over an inch and it makes my widows peak more pronounced. I don’t appear to have any miniaturization beyond my hairline. Could it be that I have a mature hairline but the corners are set back more due to the fact I’ve always had a widows peak?
It might just be a mature hairline, but based on your description alone if you have recession in the corners it sounds like you may be developing a Norwood 3 hair loss pattern. That would make your widow’s peak appear more pronounced.
That’s precisely what I had…always had a widows peak so I wasn’t too concerned with further recession at the temples as I figured it was just a maturing hairline with the corners set even further back since they were already back to begin with.
And then at the age of about 32-33, my hair loss started intensifying to the point where it was becoming quite noticeable…different from just my old widow’s peak. I was starting to look bald. I was scared and finally got the guts and good sense to visit Dr. Bernstein in NYC.
He told me I was going bald.
I had miniaturization all over the top of my head in addition to what had become severely receding corners and even a receding front hairline. A classic NW 3 with a thinning top. My balding was getting aggressive. I was headed to an NW 4 or 5 within the next few years.
He prescribed finasteride and recommended that I use minoxidil. I sat around for another three months waiting for a miracle, hoping that the process would somehow stop on its own but to no avail. I had to confront the reality that if I did nothing, I was going bald shortly.
About two years later now, I am about an NW 2. I have more hair now that I did at 16. Thanks to finasteride and minoxidil! The stuff really works if you just follow the instructions, take the finasteride and take the time to apply minoxidil 5% 2x per day.
There is nothing wrong with going bald if you don’t mind. But if you don’t want to be bald (this is a progressive condition), it’s important to get ahead of this ASAP. See an IAHRS approved hair doctor and get a formal diagnosis. If you are formally diagnosed with androgenic alopecia (MPB), get on a medical treatment program. I am glad I made this decision two years ago. I’m telling you after two years, just about all the balding I’ve had throughout my life has reversed.
I thought corners receding up to about an inch or so was one of the hallmarks of a mature hairline? That’s one of the descriptions used in this blog to identify a maturing hairline as opposed to MPB.
I can’t imagine the widows peak has anything to do with it, that’s just the shape of the very front hairline isn’t it? If there was recession beyond the hairline and the corners receded more and more – I can see how that’s an NW3 or greater but having the traditional mature ‘M’ shaped hairline would just be more prominent looking with a large widows peak.
