Does Finasteride Change a Woman’s Cycle?
Will taking finesteride alone cause changes in a woman’s cycle. I recently stopped birth control pills and continued the finesteride but have noticed some changes.
Thanks
Finasteride is NOT approved or recommended for women, especially those who are of childbearing age. Even more importantly, finasteride can potentially cause birth defects if you were to stop your birth control and become pregnant. You need to speak with your doctor and address your issues. I can’t imagine why any doctor would prescribe this medication to you at your age.
Since there have been no studies (that I know of) in women of child bearing age, I would not know how it would affect the woman’s cycle. There was a small study on finasteride in women experiencing postmenopausal hair loss, but this is clearly not the case for you.
Take it easy. In the Netherlands is a wellknown caring doctor whos been treating thousands of man and women since 1996 with finasteride and his data shows there havent been significant problems. He do let his female patients sign a paper wich says to not take the drug while planning for pregnancy. So i hope you have a doctor who cares about you and your hair too, and whos not jumping into conclusions to quick.. Goodluck! gr from the Netherlands

Finasteride is a Pregnancy class X drug – highly teratogenic (causes severe birth defects). Any physician who prescribes such a drug off-label to a woman of childbearing potential for a cosmetic reason is not doing the patient any favor. And ‘signing†a waiver by the patient – in the US- properly does not protect the physician from litigation or the courts. The Netherlands may be different. But, the “well caring physician ” you speak of obviously hasn’t had any of his ‘thousands” of patients become pregnant and carry the child to term. I’m skeptical. The label of the drug in The Netherlands caries the same warnings as elsewhere.
