In the News – Propecia Turned Man Into a Gay Cross-dresser?!?!
Snippet from the article:
This baldness cure was a bust. For nine months, William McKee took the generic version of Propecia, the pills that promise to halt hair loss. But the drug had radical side effects: Instead of becoming a better-looking man, he started becoming a woman, he claims.
“My rock-hard chest from the gym began to soften . . . reaching the point where I had noticeable ‘breasts’ even under my clothing,†he says.
Among other changes, the 38-year-old software engineer claims, “my shoulders were literally falling into a more feminine position, and my hips were loosening and becoming wider, as on a woman’s body.â€
McKee, who says he wasn’t inclined to cross-dress before, began feeling like a woman. He is now only attracted to men.

Wow. The article starts with calling Propecia a cure that didn’t work, so the story itself begins with a loss of journalistic credibility right off the bat (there is no cure for hair loss). The story and the source are highly suspect, and this is hyped up BS. I have an extremely difficult time believing an ounce of truth to this. The guy said he bought a generic finasteride online from India (probably without a prescription), and now he is frustrated that he can’t sue Merck… so this is the story that gets spun and published.
For all that Propecia has been blamed for, this is a new extreme. Propecia does not turn you gay and it doesn’t make you want to dress like a woman. But I guess with all the hysteria out there, Propecia becomes a convenient catch-all excuse for anything and everything.
Im sorry, Dr. Rassman, but this has to be funniest post I have ever seen in the history of your blog! :D
I can’t even say this is at all surprising. Basically anyone who has ever taken the drug finasteride can blame it for virtually any side effect they are currently experiencing and sue Merck for it! I’m glad this idiot bought the generic version of the drug and not brand name, so he’s not going to get a single penny from his lies.
But yeah, this story is hilarious. I love how he claims not only did the drug cause him to develop breasts, but it changed the shape of his entire body to that of a female. On top of that, it made him turn gay and forced him to start wearing women’s clothing. Clearly there is no end to Merck’s evil! I wonder if murderers will start blaming their actions on this drug next?
The stories about this drug are just getting crazier and even more far fetched. In the end, this just all lessens the legitimacy of the whole thing.
and i thought i was the only one who turned into a gay cross dresser.
I like how all this supposedly happened in 9 months. Maybe they should market propecia at flay chested females. “We will grow you boobs in 9 months.” This is such a laugh.
Well, finasteride got a lot of sides, but i doubt can transform the sexuality.
Anyway not want to sound bad i found this post very funny
Assuming this wasn’t just BS for a moment (bear with me!) did it occur to anyone that buying an unlabelled, unlicensed drug could have been anything? This could have been a titanic dose of estrogen! Might explain breasts, feminine fat deposits and altered sexual drive (though not sexual preference despite what some right wingers might profess).
No one can retrospective say for sure whether or not finasteride caused this person’s transgender disorder. However, finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor and humans with a congenital 5-alpha reductase deficiency suffer from pseudohermaphroditism in which their male genitalia does not develop until later in life.
A Pulitzer prize winning book was written several years ago called Middlesex about a man who had an ambiguous gender identity due to his 5-AR deficiency brought about by genetic causes. The idea really does not seem far-fetched and I think it is despicable that people on this forum are ridiculing a troubled man who has been dealt a less fortunate hand in life.
Congenital 5a reductase deficiency is very different affecting someone before the onset of sexual characteristics and a 38 year old man taking an unknown compound he alleges was finasteride for 9 months and yet alters not only hisdevelopmental physiology but also his sexual orientation. Gender identity and sexual orientation are NOT the same thing in any way and your confusion of the two is quite insulting. If you want to post your anti propecia perspective I’d fully support that right (and I’m glad Dr Rassman allows opposing views on his blog) but if you want to throw medical definitions around you probably need to understand them and not confuse basic differences such as gender identity and sexual orientation and developmental biology.
Paul you seem a little upset. I am aware that transgender identity and sexual orientation are two separate concepts but they are far from mutually exclusive and in fact highly correlated with each other. I also know that a decrease in 5-alpha-reductase in adulthood will have a different effect on an infant born with a genetic disease. However, if an enzyme deficiency is capable of causing a certain problem at birth it is really not that far-fetched to think artificial suppression of the same enzyme may cause some serious problems later in life.
I suspect just a few weeks away:
