Is My Hairline Normal for an 18 Year Old (With Photos)
I am a 18 year old male. My dad is 50 with somewhere between a Norwood III and IV. My grandpa is probably a IV, but I doubt V because he has a fair amount of hair. I am wondering if my hairline is normal for my age? What about the corners? I’m sorry if the pictures aren’t decent enough.
You may publish my photos.
I guess we can let the readers comment. If you want to setup a consultation in our office, please call us at (800) NEW-HAIR. In a consultation (one-on-one with a physician), you can have your hair evaluated for early signs of hair loss with miniaturization(examination with a trichoscope) ,and bulk measurements (with the HAIRCHECK instrument: https://baldingblog.com/haircheck-test-how-it-is-done-video/). The key is to find out if you are in the beginning of the balding process. From these photos, there is no way to tell and we need objective tests to find out. Doctors who specialize in this field have these instruments and can get these tests done on you.
Hard to tell if it’s a mature hairline or some very early recession. The center of the forelock, to my eye, looks a bit ragged. My impression is that’s how thinning begins; the even line of the hairline starts to disintegrate and become a bit “holey,” which is what it looks like here. On the other hand, he could just have a naturally jagged/uneven hairline, which isn’t unheard of.
your hair looks good. it wouldn’t hurt to take propecia 1mg/day or 0.5mg/day to combat any bad genes you might have. also try hairdx. but even then, you would be dealing with hairline maturation which is not necessarily cosmetically acceptable. I think your hair looks VERY good in these pictures though. But being 19, YOU MUST BE PROACTIVE NOW! Bad genes will cause devastation if you don’t do something to medically combat them now. Any negative side effects from DHT inhibitors can be successfully countered through exercise, stress reduction techniques, sildenafil etc., chest surgery, hormone therapy, etc. so you can continue to take the propecia with no worries. ACT NOW if you are prone to hair loss. If you’ve had acne, you are likely to have alopecia/MPB. If you have oily skin…you are more likely to have hair loss. Consider accutane (low-dose) if you’ve had or have these issues (can’t tell from your pics). My hair is thick compared to others in my family and the only difference is I’m on accutane + propecia. They’re only on propecia. IT IS VERY INTERESTING that people blame accutane for everything when in reality it may be a very effective agent in stopping hair loss when taken at low doses in conjunction with propecia. Sorry I’m typing fast when I’m busy doing other things and trying to be as helpful as I can!!!!!
There’s no medical link between acne and MPB.
The hairline looks perfectly fine to me in these pictures – better than most men. Of course you are young so you could lose hair in future but it’s worth having a good doctor look at it, assess it over a few years and try not to obsess.
I would not take Propecia (or any drug) to “combat bad genes” unless there is clear evidence of miniturization and risk of progression to – as Dr R nicely states – rule in or rule out if you are in the beginning of the balding process
doesn’t that level of corner recession tell us it’s norwood 3?
Not really.
Plenty of men are born with hairlines that come to a point at the temples.
