Can Some Scalp Hair Be Affected by DHT, While Other Scalp Hair Isn’t?
Dear Dr.
Is it possible to have around 50% of hair that is not affected by DHT while others become miniaturized in the same area? I am a 28 year old male and the reason I ask is that, when my hair is wet it becomes very apparent that i have lost hair. My scalp looks very shiny to the point where I look baldish. When all my hair dries, I still look like I have a full head of hair because my hair is moderate length and very dark. Will this miniaturization continue and affect the left over hair? I wish I had caught this earlier but it seems that it has snuck up on me over time. Also, part of me is still in denial
but slowly it is hitting me. Thank you
Propecia (finasteride) impacts all of the DHT receptors in the hair about equally. It is possible that some hairs may make more DHT, but I don’t believe that there is evidence that this is the case.
Hello, I recently have experienced considerable sudden hairloss. I began to notice thinning about a month and a half ago (before this time I had a full head of curly dark hair that was so thick it was nearly unmanagable). As of today, I can’t run my fingers through my hair without getting about 3-4 “clingers” each time. I have had several people joke to me about my hair. My girlfriend’s bed is covered with traces of my hair, so it’s very apparent to her as well. Most shocking thing is, that not a single person in my family has any hint of hairloss – paternal or maternal. Also, the hair is falling out symmetrically throughout my entire head; the back is just as thin as the frontal areas. I recently noticed that my hairloss is indescriminatory – I rub my sideburns, hair falls out. I scratch my eyebrows, hair falls out. I have been taking a generic brand of rogaine for about 2 weeks, but so far nothing has changed.
I am beginning to lose hope and feel that I am fighting a losing battle, a battle which I have absolutely no control over.
