15 Year Old Female with Hair Loss
Your information on female hair loss was helpful, but the information on teenage female hair loss was not as informative. I’m fifteen, and I feel I need more information. When I was a child, I had thick hair. When I was around seven, I cut it short. It was still thick then. Around seventh grade I decided to grow it back out, but still, it was thick then. When I started my freshman year in high school, though, mid-year, it began to thin. It has shown no sign of stopping, and it does worry me. My ponytail has significantly gone down in size. I can’t wear my hair down without having loose strands cover my back – which is not popular at school. Plus, I lose an extreme amount of hair each time I shower – at least fifty strands. My hair is also lackluster in shine, and crooked and crinkled when it falls out. My mother took me to a doctor, who told me it was not my thyroid level. A week or two ago, my father told me to start taking vitamins and trying to eat better – the latter of which is hard, when you go to high school. Personally, though, I’m not sure that I believe this is a diet issue. If it was, why wouldn’t it affect more teenage girls at my school? I wish to know if there are medical conditions that I might have that give a symptom of hair loss, and possibly also slight depression – I have noticed that my mood seems to be getting worse and worse. I am also on birth control, which I noticed you said might cause problems… but it shouldn’t, because I have been having hair loss much longer than I’ve been on birth control. I just want to know what I could have, and how I can get this to stop.
You need to have a good doctor do a thorough work-up on you. There is no way I can help you without getting a full opportunity to get a good history (including detailed dietary history) and a full examination of your scalp and hair for miniaturization. This will determine the health of your hair and your overall health. There are no shortcuts and no internet site that can get you what you want, because what you need is a good doctor (one who is interested in this field) first. Also, look through the Female Hair Loss category, as there are many posts that discuss the various conditions and tests that are part of what a good doctor will be able to perform on you.
i have the same thing exactly the same but i haven’t gone to any kind of doctor my family says its normal that im going through hormonies how can i get them to understant that this is not normal and that im scared
Oh my, I have the same problem. I find myself in tears when i take showers due to the significant amount of hair that falls out. I don’t know what to do, my parents don’t believe that it’s a serious problem. My mother bought me this horrible cream to put on my head and instead it makes my hair fall out more.. Honestly, I’m terrified I’ll go bald in a few months. I don’t know what to do. I eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, and get enough milk… So, I can’t be lacking vitamins. Gosh, I’m horrified by it..
My Daughter is 16 and experiencing extreme hair loss. It covers her back and clothing, falls in her food, falls out when we stroke her hair and clogs the plug when she takes a shower. Her hair is noticeably thinner to us. We have been to two doctors, both of whom say it is not serious and it will pass. It is distressing, though, as you cannot believe that so much hair can fall out without making her go bald! There is no inflamation of the scalp and she eats well. Doctors have just started her on the birth control pill (to control extremely heavy menstrual flow)so I’m hoping the hormonal ‘balancing’ may have a helpful side effect with the hair. I’m also wondering whether the strong menstrual flow might be causing anaemia or iron deficiency, which I’ve read is a cause of female hair loss.
My daughter is 17 and has the exact same symptoms as everyone above. I have taken her to 2 dr’s and they ran blood test and they dont seem to know anymore than they did before the test. She had very thick hair until a year ago and now it is very thin. The shower drain is completely covered with hair when she gets out and it falls out everytime she brushes it. Did the people who commented above find any answers. Im afraid she will be bald if her hair keeps falling out at this rate.

Im also 15 and my hair falls out every time i brush it or wash it. I am also on birth control and it seems that everyone that has this problem is on birth control so i am wondering if that is part of the reason why. I also think that i might be anemic because i almost pass out every time i bend over or stand up. but i eat lots of vegetables and i take vitamins every day so idk.

hi im diana and im 15 years old. I have the same exact problem as you guys. i used to have really thick hair and ever since i started straightening it my hair has fallen out a lot. i dont know what to do. its kind of scary. i loosed some hair when i comb and straighten my hair. its kind of a relief to know that im not the only one that has this problem. but i hope to find a solution too.
omg! im also 15 with the same problem
I have the exact same problem as everyone else here. I am 15 and my hair falls out in excessive amounts every time I brush or wash my hair, my only difference is that I’m not on birth control. My hair used to be very very thick and curly, but it is getting less and less so at a fast rate. Because it is curly I only brush it while wet or just before my shower to stop knots and frizz.. but I’m finding the hair that is falling out is getting caught in my curls and knotting. I’m glad to know I’m not the only suffering from this but I would love some good answers or easy tips!!
i have been having almost the same hair thing. but my hair doesnt fall out in big clumps. its 3 or 4 strands here and there. i used to put a moose in my hair and used anti frizzy spray. but i havent used it for at least 5 weeks could that be my problem? i’m a worry worry wort and i was sick for 5 weeks. could it be my nurve? please any ideas? i’m not on birth control but i have been trying to stay away from milk does my body need more?
Hi there,
I am also a fifteen year old. And every day I am loosing excessive amounts of hair which calculate up to around 70 strands. When I was a child I used to have thick hair but in my teenage years my hair gradually started falling in excessive amounts. I try to put oil in my hair at least once a week and wash it off in 2days. I wash my hair every 2days. I don’t know what to do. I am really concerned and I use a natural shampoo recommended for hairloss. I don’t know what to do and this is cocnerning me as I am a girl and I am not on a diet nor do i intend to be one. Please help me urgently as I am really worried. Most girls at my school don’t even have hairloss. Is it because of the Australian water which has a lot of chemicals? I don’t know…PLEASE HELP ME someone…would kindly appreciate it! XOX
Hi, I’m fifteen years old too and I have the same problem of hair loss, maybe even worse! I used to have thick hair a couple of months ago but out of the blue I started shedding so much hair. Usually, when I washed my hair I would lose a lot of hair and that was normal but now that’s happening on a daily basis even when I don’t wash my hair. Now when I wash my hair or when it gets oily, bald spots are becoming noticeable! I’m trying many remedies to strengthen my hair and it seems to help but I don’t feel like there is new hair growing back fast enough… Are there any suggestions on fast hair growth? I’m in desperate need of it!
I have the same problem. After I got my period at the age of 13, I’d say a year after that it slowly started thinning. Had blood work done and thyroid, hormone, testosterone levels all normal. My mom is now going to take me to a dermatologist. I’m also scared.
i’m 15 and i have the same problem. you can see my scalp, it’s super embarrassing. my mum is not helping at all. I feel so insecure.
You can write to me
Im 15 and I have all the same problems, my hair has been thick all my life and up until this year. I have lost a significant about of hair and it is noticeable when I look back at pictures. It has been falling out in large clumps when I shower, brush or straiten it (which I don’t do very often due to damage) I went to the doctor and he says it’s normal and that it will pass but I feel like it won’t stop. I use castor oil on my roots and I feel like I take very good care of my hair because my mom is a hair dresser and taught me about hair care so I don’t know what is wrong
If you are not happy with the doctor you visited, see another doctor. There is no reason to live like this
William Rassman, M.D,
hi im chloe, and im also 15 and i have the same thing!! everyone is commenting the same stuff but where are the answers?? My hair was SUPER thick and SUPER long for ages and im in year 10 and since around year 8 my hair has been falling out A LOT and idk why!! I have curly hair and i wash my hair only once a week and i straighten after washing only once a week too (i use a heat protectant spray and i let my hair air dry completely before straightening) ive been doing this for a bout 3 years but only recently has my hair been falling out so much! People have told me to not brush my hair after straightening and in the morning before school to keep the straight hair longer and this does work obviously bc it lasts me a week before i have to straighten( so do this if u want to straighten less ). I tie my hair into a pony tail every morning so that could be it but ive done that my whole life? i guess i dont have the best diet bc ive read in a lot of places that healthy diets are good for your hair. Since no one is really replying to other peoples comments with answers i thought id add some things i know.
1. Loosing about 80-100 strands of hair A DAY is normal so if u dont brush or wash say every 3 days, then think about the 3 days worth of strands that are supposed to drop and fall out, so all at once will seem daunting and really bad.
2. ITS NOT CANCER, yeah there may be small forms of diseases like alopecia that make you lose your hair BUT people lose hair from cancer due to the TREATMENT of cancer which is chemotherapy, and not the cancer itself.
3. It could be hereditary — so ask your parents if they’ve ever had this or their parents. This is harder to treat because its in your genes so you cant avoid it.
4. Have a healthier diet and eat MORE fruit and vegetables and milk if you’re already eating enough, and drink more water (yea ik you’ve probably heard this everywhere)
5. This is could be a result of you’re mental issues ie – depression, anxiety, stress, lack of sleep or whatever so i guess there is no simple answer for those causes but try and be a little stress free and sleep more. (Also if you take antidepressant pills or anything those also have side affects of hair loss)
6. Try and buy some good hair vitamins or iron vitamins or any vitamins u might be lacking ( check with doc). These will actually help but you will only notice results 6-8 weeks after so u have to give it time and be consistent. (combine this with a healthy diet and it’ll be even better)
7. Hair styling… yes ik that you know about it so try and cut down to no more than once a week straightening or styling with heat, USE A HEAT PROTECTANT SPRAY yes those will help more. and try to air dry your hair, trust me its wayyy better. try and find alternatives like try and be natural with ur hair and not straighten (ik some of you cant but try? idk)
8. Try and do less tight hair do’s like REALLY high and tight pony tails or braids or a bun everyday, try and keep it out even or like one loose braid. ALso when taking out hair ties hold ur head so that it pulls less and might make it easier.
9. USING REALLY HOT WATER IN THE SHOWER IS LIKE A HEAT PRODUCT. try and use colder water and only luke warm, bc it makes ur head really hot and when u run ur hands through ur hair in the shower more will fall out. ALSO brush your hair before you wash it (like right before entering) as it makes it easier for your hands to glide through when wet (also try and only glide through when ur using conditioner as it makes it easier BUT DONT BE ROUGH BC UR HAIR WILL BE VULNERABLE AND SOFT AT THIS POINT).
10. Sort of connects with number 9 but dont rub ur hair a lot on the shower or when ur towel drying it or whatever bc thats makes it frizzy and more damaged and easy to break.
11. DONT WASH YOUR HAIR EVERY DAY —THIS IS BAD. Washing it every 2 days is okay but best is every 3,4,5. Hair loss is most in the shower so more showers=more loss. ALSO when u brush your hair dont brush it for too long or too hard, instead take little bunches and brush through and fix knots the long way rather than brushed through them really rough. dont brush ur hair too often either, give it time to be still and not disrupted.
COMBINE ALL THESE TOGETHER AND IT SHOULD HELP (i hope)
Sorry it was really long but i hope all of us get our better hair back!!
xxx
Don’t obsess over your hair. Shampoo daily and that should be enough
