Are Young Women Losing More Hair Lately?

Hi Doctor – What do you think is causing young women (teens and 20’s) to lose hair? I see more young women thinning. Any thoughts? My daughters (17) hair has thinned gradually for over a year with no regrowth. The doctor tells me that it is not AGA because her hair density is the same all over her entire head. I find that I’m looking at everyone’s head these days and this is what I am seeing.

I don’t think that there is any difference in young women now or in any time in the past, but I believe you are more attuned to observing what might have passed you by before your daughter reported a problem. If you are concerned about androgenic alopecia (AGA), you can obtain a genetic test to determine if she has the gene for female balding.
