Balding Time-Lapse Video
Hi Dr. Rassman
I just watched a timelapse video of a man age for 17 years, which shows the balding process really nicely. I noticed that his hairline recedes very slowly and gradually. But his crown thins all of the sudden at age 44. Can you explain why this happened?
Thanks
This is a great video illustration! This man took multiple photos daily for nearly two decades. As to why he lost his hair in this way… it’s all in the genetics.
See the video below:
Eli, you’re not serious are you? Miracle drug? What is that, a joke?
You think it’s a good idea for guys to trade their sex lives for hair? Sounds like a pretty lousy trade to me.
At first I thought this video was fake. Why would someone make and keep photos of themselves over 20 years like that? Seems odd to me.
But the photos do show some signs of facial aging so maybe it’s legit. Who knows?
I’m really impressed with the answer by Dr. Rassman that says, “As to why he lost his hair in this way… it’s all in the genetics.” Four years of medical school really taught him to be insightful about hair loss patterns across men.
I doubt Dr Rassman has seen this guy outside of the video that is on Youtube so there’s no medical history for him to go off of. Genetics are the cause for MPB. So Dr Rassman gave an obvious answer to a dumb question, but I suppose with all of your time trolling forums you have a better explanation?
I don’t personally have a better answer, but I am not particularly interested in male pattern baldness nor do I have an MD with a specialty in hair transplantation surgery.
The original question was not so dumb – it gives rise to additional thought provoking questions about hairloss that Dr. Rassman, and maybe even modern medicine, apparently can’t answer.
For example – if “genetics” play a major role in hair loss, why is the hair loss pattern triggered specifically in the 3rd and 4th decades of life? Why does hair loss occur at a varying speeds over a lifetime whereas genetic factors remain constant? Is there a certain gene that codes for baldness in certain areas of the head? Did some environmental factor exacerbate or trigger his pre-existing genetic condition at age 44?
These are all pretty simple questions that we may not currently be able to answer. Instead we provide anti-androgens to prevent balding without having a more nuanced understanding of what we are doing or what is happening?
Wow this was so cool! It’s also interesting to see how different hair styles and lengths affect how old he looks so much.
“What a typical male heterosexual remark. LOL. Gay men don’t think like that (giving up on how you look after getting the job or relationship).”
Not all straight men are fat slobs. I’m sure you would not appreciate a straight man making sweeping generalizations about the LGBT community?

Well now, I never said anything about all people in any group. It is interesting to see straight people can dish out generalizations but when someone throws a little bit of the same back in their faces they can’t handle it. LOL.
I thought it was interesting how quick the progression of hairloss on the crown was. It looks like it started around 38 and quickly progressed to a significant bald patch by 44
Mark: I don’t think the hair styles or hair lengths have anything to do with how old he looks. It’s the facial aging you are noticing and it’s so subtle that you are not paying attention and only think it’s the hair. Notice the jawline and the increasing laxity? The descent of the facial fat pads in the cheeks? That’s what’s going on. It’s got nothing to do with the hair.
