Does MPB Speed Up or Is Loss Speed Consistent?
Doctor,
Thank you for your informative blog. I recently saw 2 dermatologists, both agreed that I am showing signs of MPB. I have no family history, so I am puzzled by the diagnosis.About 6 or so months ago I noticed dry skin along my hairline and thought it was the return of a psoriasis like condition I had several years earlier. I treated it and it went away. However, I noticed hair continued to come out. I notice in the shower I would see anywhere from 30-80 hairs in my hand. If I showered 2x in a day I would see the same thing both times. In all, I estimate that I am losing several hundred hairs a day, and noticed significant thinning all over my scalp (in the areas of MPB) since that time, and it seems to be thinning daily, both by sight and feel. My question is, is this normal for someone suffering from MPB to lose this much hair every day, everything I see seems to indicate that this is higher then “normal” even for someone losing their hair. Does MPB speed up at a certain point? I may have been losing for a long time and not noticed, but do not believe this to be the case. Any insight you can offer about the process of daily hair loss in relation to MPB would be most appreciated.
Thanks
I suspect that your hair loss is occurring at a regular rate (on average). I tell patients that everyone loses 100-150 hairs per day and some of it comes out in the shower, on the brush, in the wind… everywhere. The balding process does not go up and down like a seesaw. It is relatively constant even for those who lose their hair. If you believe that you have MPB, then get your hair mapped out for miniaturization and find out for sure.
