Hair Loss from MRI Scan?
Hello Dr. Im a 20 yr old, white male. Over the past few months my hairline has begun to recede. I’ve also noticed large amounts of hairloss in the shower(150 hairs everytime i wash it). The hairloss began in June and has continued without showing any signs of stopping. I still have a full head of hair and it’s still growing at the same rate, but it’s become thinner, especially on the sides. I’ve also observed that i can pull out some hair easily from any part of my scalp. It doesn’t come out in clumps ,just individual hairs. My scalp has also become alot more itchy and scratching it just causes more hair to fall out. My worry is I had an MRI scan a few years ago – could radiation from that cause my hairloss now or does this sound like male pattern baldness to you? Thank you for help.
The MRI does not use radiation, it uses magnetic fields. There is no connection between magnetic fields and hair loss. You are at the right age for the appearance of genetic hair loss. If you are losing 150 hairs/day, it does sound like you need to have your hair mapped out for miniaturization to get a diagnosis firmly in hand. If you are genetically balding, then drugs like Propecia work to slow, stop, or reverse hair loss. Now is the time in your life that if you take charge, you are best able to manage it. The more hair you lose, the further down the ‘one way street’ you will go to becoming bald.
Q. Does a M R I – cause hair loss?

I have NEVER EXPERIENCE HAIR LOSS “BUT”
After taking an M R I, i’m experiencing hair loss.
A M R I – may not use radiation – but is it possible that the powerful magnetic field caused some type of molecular imbalance? So i believe it is possible! For example, if the Earths electro-magnetic field is disrupted this will cause an imbalance on Earth and since we are a part of this magnificant cycle of life – what gives the idea that our electro-magnetic Arua (field) is not disrupted

DEAR EDITOR,
Sadly the internet is now full of supposed experts who are quick to pronounce the alleged ‘truth’ without hesitation, nor any substantiating data to validate their opinions. MRI’s utilize powerful magnetic fields, and also project radio waves into the target regions of the patient’s body. Radio waves are a ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION. Yes, they are part of the spectrum of Electromagnetic frequencies, and are most definitely defined as radiation. The magnetic field is utitilized to align your body’s water molecules, after which, the radio waves are directed into target tissues/region of one’s body. Did you even spend any time actually researching this data, or did you simply assume your knowledge to be impeccable? Interestingly enough is the large number of individuals who notice balding/thinning of hair after MRI’s and/or CT scans.
CT scans alone statistically increase cancer induced mortality, especially chest scans/head scans.
I had a brain aneurysm in07. And I noticed hair loss in the area where they worked I believe it definitely has something to do with it
I underwent a MRI of my head about 2 months ago. It lasted 50 minutes and included with and without contrast. It was to confirm the swelling in my eye was thyroid eye disease and not something else . Since this condition started 15 years ago I was confident if it was anything to be alarmed about I would have known a long time ago. I was not informed about possible hair loss and didn’t know of any real concern with having the MRI, along with being a registered nurse and not wanting to seem non compliant… I went along with having the MRI . Within a couple of weeks of the MRI I started to loose LARGE amounts of hair! This continued for a month! Now I am back to loosing the normal amount of hair daily, but I now have a third of the hair I had before the MRI. If I had been informed about the possibility of extreme hair loss ; in my case I would have had the luxury of NOT having the MRI and risking so much hair loss!!!!
The stress that you may have gone through could accelerate hair loss and when the stress abated, then everything went back to normal. I don’t believe that the MRI was responsible for your hair loss.
