Hair Thinning Where Hair Extensions Are
Hi,
I have been wearing hair extentsions for 3 years now. The areas in which I have been wearing them seem to be thinning. I was wondering if the hair will grow back. Also, my scalp is itchy and burning in these areas. Sometimes it’s even painful. Should I go see a dermatologist? The hair extensions were clip in so are they safe? I thought clip in extensions were safe and wouldn’t damage my hair.
If your skin/scalp is irritated and ‘itchy”, you should see a doctor. Hair loss from hair extension is relatively common and is called traction alopecia. Most of the time if the insult has been ongoing, the hair may not grow back. Anything that pulls on the hair, even clip-ons, can cause traction alopecia. If you are now seeing thinning, then it is safe to assume that you are losing hair from the hair extensions. Best to stop using them now.
People do strange things to be accepted and feel beautiful. My eyelashes were falling out and the physician and myself believe it was due to stress, you can imagine how awful this experience was. I didn’t want to use fake eyelashes as the glue could have had negative effects, so it was a waiting game. When I decided to try extensions, I was cautious due to my previous experience. I did some research and came to the conclusion that temporary extensions would be best. If you are using clip-in hair extensions, do not use them on a daily basis and they should not be used longer than necessary. Another thing I did was to shift the area of application thus the same hair will not be pulled every time you use these extensions. Be warned glue-ins or these permanent extensions may have undesirable side effects.
