I Can’t Believe They Put Breast Implant To Someone’s Scalp For a Scar Reduction
Article I read in dailymail uk. I still cant believe they would allow surgeons to perform transplants that have no experience or knowledge doing it
What you are referring to is a TV show called Botched that runs on E.
What Dr. Paul Nassif and Dr. Terry Dubrow does is basically inserting tissue expander to the scalp. In my opinion it seems a bit sensationalized by saying it was a breast implant to the scalp but this is TV after all. I also wouldn’t call it a “botched” surgery since hair transplant surgery does leave a scar. (Any cut on the skin leaves a scar for that matter.) It is Mike’s original doctor who misled him and gave him a false expectation promising him that he will not have a scar!
Hair transplant doctors routinely fix bad hair transplant scars and it includes the use of tissue expanders on occasion. Plastic surgeons are just as well equipped for this type of surgery as well. The ultimate choice of choosing the doctor is based on the patients research and their comfort level with the surgeon in question.
I would like to see the follow up results after a year. From what I saw, Mike’s scar (the patient) didn’t seem as wide as many scars we have seen; however, it is possible that his scalp was very tight, too tight for a normal scar revision surgery. In these cases a tissue expander can be used (not quite a breast implant). Despite these techniques, scar revisions do not always heal as well as one may expect. You still end up with a scar even after the repair surgery. What I tell patients is at best you’ll get a 50% reduction in the scar. Maybe that was worth it for this patient.
There are other alternatives such as Scalp Micropigment (SMP) to these types of scars.
