I Was Taking 5mg Finasteride Daily

I am a 30 year old male who noticed a sudden thinning of hair a couple of years ago. Everytime I showered there would be tons of hair in my shower drain. I then started taking proscar and noticed an immediate change. I no longer had hair clogging up my drain. I have been taking 5mg a day for last couple years. Recently I have been reading that we should only be taking 1 mg a day. I recently cut back to 1 mg but have noticed a slight thinning once again in my hair. Any thoughts or suggestions?

You brought up an interesting point that I don’t believe we’ve ever examined. Since recommended does of finasteride for treatment of hair loss is 1mg, there is no study to compare this with 5mg of the medication per day for those who have a poor response to the drug. It is possible that 5mg is more effective, but we don’t know to what degree, and whether it is worth taking a higher dose of the medication or not. Why not try half a dose (2.5mgs) and see if that does it for you!
