I’m Female and My Doctor Prescribed Me Dutasteride — But What If I Want to Get Pregnant?
i am 31 years old female, not married yet and i am having male pattern baldness as my doctor said. i started mesotherapy sessions using dutasteride and minoxidil and some vitamins. i am concerned about using dutasteride but my doc said its not harmful as finasteride. is that true?
my question is if i got married and it is possible to get pregnant, when should i stop taking the sessions of mesotherapy before getting pregnant? and thank u so much
The use of dutasteride or finasteride in pregnancy may impact the sexual development of the fetus in the first trimester (i.e cause birth defects). For this reason, doctors should not prescribe this drug for women who may become pregnant.
Based on my research and doctor’s opinions… A woman taking dutasteride is risky because of the side effects that “could” have on male fetus. This is only a warning that the company and FDA together determined to caution users. It is not a factual effect and there arent any direct reports to warn of this possible danger, but because medicines of the same type have been known, it was needed to mention. There may also be an increase risk of breast cancer because antiandrogen have been known to enlarge breast (including men’s) so extra caution and exams should occur while using.
That being stated… The life of the drug in a persons system could be about 5 months so it is recommended for a woman to avoid if she is planning to or could possibly get pregnant. But she can use it if precautions are taken and stop taking at least 6 months before TRYING to conceive. A good rule while taking is to use a birth control pills with minimal side effects and health risk that would be low “androgenic” with the progesteron “norgestimate” such as ortho tri cyclen or cilest. These are good for people taking other “anti-androgens” such as dutasteride. Not only for preventing pregnancy but will also help with acne, oily hair/skin, and even aid in hairloss battle. It can POSSIBLY lower chance of certain cancer.
Going to newer generation progesterone such as “desogestrel or drospirone” should be avoided because they increase risk of blood clots, especially after age 30-35. These include yaz, yasmin, desogen, mircette, etc. One doctor told me a good rule with these birth control is to stay away from these if you have busted/spider viens or anyone in your family has had blood clots.
I hope I provided adequate information for someone in need of it. As I said it is based on the information that I have gathered with alot of research from actual sources and my doctors in my search and battle for hairloss (andgrogenic alopecia) and acne. Good luck to you and best wishes for your hair to come back full force. Fight it with a vengeance!
It is also worth mentioning that women should know the medications that their partner is on. With dutasteride… If a man is taking it and gets a woman pregnant it is warned (not verified) that the same harm can occur with the male fetus. So the medication is believed to be past during intercourse. So if your partner is taking it, the same precautions should be exercised for a woman who can get pregnant
