I’m Scared of What I Read About Propecia AND Minoxidil’s Libido Issues
Listen guys, I am sure you get this question a lot, but I’m 18 years old. Within the last year, my hairline has receded noticeable and on the crown of my head there is definitely thinning.
The side-effects of propecia (loss of libido, impotence, etc) turned me off to the product, so I first considered minoxodil (aka rogaine), well upon further research it seems that rogaine has a very rare and similar side-effects such as loss of libido and impotence which is long-lasting affecting the youthful and the more elderly.
Can anyone clear the air on this matter, please if you use/used rogaine explain if those horror stories hold any water. The company does not list it as a possible side-effect, but the amount of scenarios ive read on the internet (i know not very reliable) has implanted an idea that this may somehow be correlated with sexual side-effects.
I appreciate all of the help, I would really like to retain what I have, family does not have a good history with balding, yet speaking with them all, I am very young to have already begun experiencing this, most of them began in their late 20’s early 30’s, so I’m crossing my fingers because i like wearing my hair long.
All medications have side effect potential. Growing old also has a side effect of loss of libido, as well. Thinking about a side effect and growing scared to take a medication due to possible side effect after reading (as you state) “unreliable” information on the Internet, can cause that side effect to manifest itself.
I am sure you will find people who used Rogaine (minoxidil) claiming loss of libido, but it’s not a known side effect in the literature as far as I’m aware. Many of the people on forums that talk about various side effects they get from any medication diagnose themselves and look for the easiest answer to come up with as a source of their problems.
Get a clear diagnosis of your medication condition. Then find a doctor who can go over your treatment goals and come up with a Master Plan. After weighing out your risk and benefits, you can make the ultimate decision if you want to take the medication.
You have a lot more to be worried about than just minoxidil and propecia.
The propecia nuts make me laugh. I really think they are secretly just minoxidil purveyors trying to distract attention away from the fact that minoxidil is a horrible substance that is likely causing much of the harm.
But they also are apologists for the unnatural prescription drug industry in general. They keep focusing on the finasteride finsasteride finasteride. When finasteride is but a blip on the radar of what is going on here.
All sorts of pills and unnatural substances are making men eunuchs, lowering their testosterone, and otherwise killing their libido. This is especially due to the dangerous EXCIPIENTS, BINDERS and FILLERS that these pill manufacturers use that make these pills poison to the human physiology.
Just look at the long list of poisons that are in the average prescription drug:
https://www.ndhealthfacts.org/wiki/Excipients_and_Fillers
Look at the list fun stuff we put into our bodies when we take these big pharma pharmaceuticals:
– magnesium stearate (suppresses human immune function)
– titanium dioxide (causes respiratory tract cancer)
– silica (auto-immune dysfunction and lung cancer. FUN FUN!)
– parabens (causes hormone disruptions in men)
– lactose (poison to the lactose intolerant)
– talc (causes cancer in peri-menopausal women…gosh knows what it does to men)
– Gellan gum – (lowers serum cholesterol levels by 12% in men, causing further hormonal defects)
– Allura Red (impairs vaginal development)
Not to mention that these pharmaceuticals companies do not properly purify their water, leaving toxic plastic contaminants in it, causing serious hormonal disruptions in men.
Finasteride IS BUT A BLIP on the radar screen when it comes to the side effects men are seeing when taking propecia.
Its like when a a big fat guy orders 10 cheeseburgers, 5 large fries , and 4 large sugary Cokes and complains that he is fat because of the Twinkie he ate for dessert.
Sure, now the EXCIPIENTS, BINDERS and FILLERS are the reasons for adverse effects on libido and lowering of testosterone…NOT! Of course, referencing a naturopatic medicine web site rather than the extensive scientific/medical/regulatory literature is the definitive confirmation. Absurd.
I can and will cite extensive medical and regulatory literature documenting the effects of excipients, binders, fillers, tainted water and MINOXIDIL on libido and lowering testosterone, IN ADDITION to the effects of finasteride. If you can even understand how to read it. Haha, stay tuned.
Finasteride is a problem but it is just one of many problems. Do not delude yourself into thinking otherwise.
And I find your attack on naturopathic research and medicine rather distasteful. Are you sure you’re not from big pharma?
Im not sure why the propecia people have this thing about propecia, how they know it is the one and only cause of sexual health problems, when it is only ONE of the poisons among MANY that hair loss sufferers are continually pumping into their body day after day.
But I intend to find out. You probably just want hair loss sufferers to go buy your dirty unnatural so-called supplement pills from whatever website you’re pushing. Filled with the same garbage fillers and unnatural methods of production.
Wow Matt, I’ve seen some pretty ridiculous comments on this blog but nothing quite as insane as yours!
The FDA mandates extensive testing over the course of years before a medication is approved for general use. Do you really think they would work so hard to enforce this but then let manufacturers load pills up with deadly, cancer causing chemicals?
Your breakdown of fillers is complete BS. In the minute quantities that these substances exist in pills, the outcomes you listed simply do not occur. There are extremely rare reactions in sensitive individuals, but certainly nothing like what you are describing.
Just a few examples that could have been easily verified if you even bothered to read the link you posted:
Yes silica can cause lung cancer, but only when INHALING massive quantities of it for many years. Consuming the extremely tiny quantities that exist in pill fillers does absolutely nothing harmful, unless maybe you inhale them instead of swallowing.
Gellan gum is linked to lower cholesterol levels in large quantities. Not only do you somehow think this a bad thing, but you state that it also causes “hormonal defects” without any basis whatsoever. Unsubstantiated alarmist BS. Unless of course you have some solid facts that support this.
Water purity is something mandated by the FDA manufacturing standards. If a company is not meeting water quality standards then they will be either fined or shut down until they are brought up to code. Not only this but concentrated amounts of the impurities in water can potentially react with the active chemicals in the medication and make them less effective. This would be reducing the yield of their manufacturing which would be pouring money down the drain. Sorry, but you are a complete idiot for even suggesting this without thinking it through.
Please by all means, post your ground breaking data that shows topical minoxidil causes sexual dysfunction and lowers testosterone. This should be good for a laugh.
“There are extremely rare reactions in sensitive individuals.”
Well I couldn’t have said it better myself.
Yes, I am talking about side effects, the rare cases. But tell that to the person who gets the rare reaction! They matter too. And the effects can be catastrophic.
The fillers, the finasteride, the minoxidil…its all unnatural poison. Yes, most people probably won’t get effects, but if you’re one of the unlucky few, you’re in for a world of hurting.
Is it worth it for a little extra hair?
Matt, what I was referring to were allergic-like reactions that infrequently occur when some individuals ingest fillers, such as swelling, rash and so on. These reactions reverse after the offending substance is removed, and don’t include symptoms like sexual dysfunction.
Your post makes absolutely no sense. If a person were allergic to fillers, they would know by the time they are at the age where they would consider treating hair loss (unless they have NEVER taken a medication, including OTC before), and would know what to look out for.
You said you had a study that linked minoxidil to sexual dysfunction, where is it? You weren’t making that up right?
Is it worth it for me to treat hair loss when maybe one out of ten thousand people has an allergic reaction to pill fillers and I know for certain I am not one of them? I’ll have to think on that one and get back to you…
I still have to dig up the studies. But minoxidil and all the fillers in propecia have harmful effects on those get reactions and side effects to these unnatural substances.
But just some of the side effects of minoxidil include:
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; dizziness; fainting; fast heartbeat; redness or irritation of the scalp; sudden, unexplained weight gain; swelling of the hands or feet…
Hard to have sex when you are having these reactions.
Please dig these studies up. I know you won’t because they don’t exist, but just humor me and find something that supports your theories.
The ‘allergic reactions’ you list are to propylene glycol or alcohol used in minoxidil solutions. The rest are reactions to the chemical itself. None of the ones you listed include any sexual symptoms.
First you say minoxidil is causing sexual symptoms, but then you have no studies to even suggest this. Then you say fillers cause all symptoms in pills, but have nothing to support this either. Now you agree that fillers cause extremely rare allergic reactions in a mere fraction of the population, but this is somehow a reason why NOBODY should ever take pills. Nobody should even risk this if they know for certain they are not allergic to any pill fillers, as the vast majority of the population already knows.
Now you are somehow suggesting that sexual symptoms are simply a result of people having unrelated allergic reactions? People lose the ability to maintain an erection or have a libido because they have a scalp rash or are itchy?
You really need to stop.
Thats exactly what I’m saying. it is at least 1 of the pathways.
and I’m not just talking itchy scalp. I’m talking severe allergic skin reactions. Severe headaches. Heart palpitations.
These things are not good for libido and overall sex life.
I have been on minoxidil for ages now never a single problem, specially libido, thats bullshit. you need stfu cause u dont make sense. minox makes you horny in any case as its merely a vasodilator….propecia might cause impotence..guess u took that crap
This if from Internal Merck study

I am quite sure that after all the court cases will be over Propecia will be gone
