In the News – Study Shows Multivitamins Aren’t Necessary
Snippet from the article:
Middle-aged women who swallow multivitamin supplements are not doing their health any favours – and are just creating expensive urine, according to the world’s largest study into the subject.
Researchers who examined the pill-popping habits of nearly 162,000 American women aged 50 to 79 found that although they swallowed dietary supplements by the bucketload, there was no sign that they reduced common cancers, heart disease or deaths.

I know it’s yet another non-hair related news clip, but this is an important study, because we are wasting our money in the hope that we will all live longer and healthier. A long and healthier life really reflects more on how we eat, what we do (sedentary vs active lifestyle), and something about our genetics (family lifelines). What you can do is exercise, eat better (less grease, fats, fried foods), and take in a balanced diet with a good assortment of vegetables.
Keep the non-hair related news coming doc. Please post whatever you feel people should know about. After all there’s more to life than just hair.
First of all what were the diets like of each of these women? Was this study done to prove that taking supplements ALONE without a healthy diet can prevent disease? Supplements are just that…SUPPLEMENTS. Not to be substituted for a good healthy diet. There is no replacement for that. But to call them useless is a bit of a stretch.
Diet is just one component to becoming a healthy person. And if we are to trust the American Food Pyramid and the advice given to use through media then judging from the evidence we have of the general health in this country I think we’ll all continue suffering with all the nice inflammatory conditions that come along with the American Diet and lifestyle.
I guarantee you don’t and most of the people in this country don’t eat enough fruits and veggies. And even if you did get close to the correct amount you probably cancel it out with the daily “cheats” of coffee loaded with sugars, deserts and disgusting pulverized grains that like to spike blood sugar.
People who are overly confident that vitamins and supplements are the ONE and only ticket to health are just as ignorant and plain stupid as people overly confident in pharmaceuticals. Should I start posting all the pharmaceuticals that have been pulled from the market from KILLING people and making MILLIONS of people seriously ill? How about the study that was released last year PROVING that Prozac is USELESS for almost all people who take it. Showing that in some SEVERE cases is MAY provide benefit. This is a drug that went through your precious clinical trials, has been prescribed for over a decade and touted as a superior anti-depressant…and all the while the truth is that it does nothing. If that’s the best “science” has to offer I’m not impressed. In fact I don’t believe the studies done on pharmaceuticals are even done in a strict scientific setting at all. They give science a bad name if you ask me. Too much money involved to trust them. You are naive doctor to think otherwise. I don’t care what your credentials are. …How about Vioxx…ah…it doesn’t matter. You’ll religiously defend it just as the quack alternative guru’s defend some of their non-scientific claims.
jeez dan, take a pill. just not a multivitamin, because those are useless.
