Insulin Resistance and Hair Loss?
Hi Docs
Some research suggest a connection between insulin resistance and hair loss. Do you agree with that? It there is a connection, will a low carb diet (high protein and fat diet/Atkins) be effective at combating hair loss?
Cheers
While there seems to be some anecdotal evidence out there, there is no proven connection between insulin resistance and balding that I know of.
Theoretically though if you have insulin resistance you tend to have higher levels of insulin, which cause lower levels of androgen binding protein causing increased levels of free androgens. This can be seen in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome and is the cause of abnormal hair growth in women (and MPB in women). So although this isn’t something that has been tested, it would follow than in men insulin resistance could worsen mpb.
