Medrol (Methylprednisolone) for Migraines and Female Hair Loss
I was on Methyl Predisolone for 20 months for Complicated Migrains. 8mg for 5 months and weaned off for many months slowly. Since I went off my hair is falling out and thinning. It did not happen when I was on them only when I went off. Does this end after a while? Is it permanent? My parents did not have hair loss. I am 44 years old. Female.
While there are many drugs that can cause hair thinning and hair loss generally for women hair loss is due to other medical causes, such as thyroid conditions for example. Genetics (which you have no control over) also play a key part. As such, your hair loss may seem related, but I cannot say if it was the medication. Even if it was the cause, there is no way to know if your hair will return back to its original state. Only time can tell… (about one year).
I completely disagree. I have massive hair loss every time I go on medrol. I’m 34, female, brunette and get hair loss within 3 days of getting a 125 IV dose.
I am experiencing the same issue weaning off of Medrol. I have been on it for 9 months and each time I step down my hair is coming out non stop. I have lost up to half of my hair, plus it is so dry and stringy. You can see scalp at the top as it is so fine. The highest dose I was every on was 20 mg and am now on 4 mg. I hope to be off of this in the next month to month in a half. Under the care of my Endocrinologist he is placing me on Hydrocortisone to ensure my adrenals function ok. THEN we will wean off of that – we hope to only be on that for one month’s time – then I will be steroid free. ALL of this was due to hives from an allergic reaction. Come to find out the hives were caused from my gallbladder only working at 4 percent. TOO much bile acids was causing my hives. Since I have had my gallbladder out – NO MORE HIVES. Ugh :-)
Now if I could only get off of the steroids once and for all and grow this hair back. SOON I am praying.
