My Mom Has Female Hair Loss — Will Finasteride Help My MPB?
Hi,
I just have three quick questions. I’m not sure if I have MPB but I’ll probably be starting finasteride soon (either generic, propecia, or proscar) at least for preventive purposes.
1.) Since my mother has the female version does this basically kill any chance of finasteride working for me? (Really hoping I get a positive answer on this one)
2.) How bad does the shedding process usually get (first 3-6 months)
3.) Is a propecia/proscar prescription interchangeable with generic finasteride since it’s cheaper (I’m pretty sure I can cut a pill in 5 equal pieces)Thanks.
- I am assuming you are a male patient. If you have genetic male pattern baldness, finasteride may help. Get a diagnosis from your doctor and if possible, a miniaturization study. Just because your mother has genetic hair loss doesn’t mean that finasteride is ruled out to work for you. I’m not sure how you’d connect the two.
- What shedding are you referring to? You do not generally shed when you start Propecia. There are reports of shedding, but it doesn’t occur for everyone. See Propecia Shedding — What Is It?
- You need to ask your doctor regarding your options on the prescriptions. The doctor will either give you a prescription for brand name Propecia or generic finasteride. It is really up to the physician to prescribe the dosage — 5mg generic is available, 1mg generic is not.
