This man had a hair transplant a few weeks before these bald spots appeared on his head. More and more of them appeared. To make the diagnosis, a biopsy needs to be done. It is likely a scarring alopecia, but it could be a variety of scalp/hair diseases triggered by the hair transplant. I have […]

Because these balding photos do not follow the Norwood scale photos of balding, I doubt that they are genetic. The diagnosis could likely be made with a hand microscope (trichoscope). These are the things that the physician should look for with a trichoscope. High on my list of diagnosis, is Alopecia Areata. Trichotillomania usually doesn’t […]
I developed this spot on my scalp. What is it and can it be transplanted? This appears like alopecia areata which is an autoimmune disease and best treated by a dermatologist with medications. Transplants to this will fail.
spot came very fast, maybe within a month? My hair is still thick and i have full hair everywhere around my hair including temples. I also added one picture without hair pulled back so you can see that its only noticeable when i pull my hair. I take daily all vitamins which are important for […]
I would have to look at them close up with a hand microscope. If I saw exclamation mark hairs, it would be a diffuse form of alopecia areata. It could also be fungal. I would see a dermatologist and get a diagnosis.
I would see a dermatologist. I suspect that you have developed Alopecia Areata but there are other things it could be. A Biopsy is needed, then followed up with appropriate treatment
This is an excellent article discussing the safety and effectiveness of oral minoxidil. “Systemic adverse effects were infrequent and only 1.7% of patients stopped the treatment due to adverse effects.” https://www.jaad.org/article/S0190-9622(21)00418-7/pdf This second article reviewed 10 published papers addressing oral minoxidil use for alopecia in men and women: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32516434/ Results: Ten articles were included for review […]
I’m a 22 year old male with androgenic alopecia and diffuse thinning. I’ve been balding since I was 18 years old. Recently, I’ve been experiencing very rapid shedding all over my scalp (top of the scalp, donor area, and both sides of the head). I went to my dermatologist and had a scalp biopsy (4mm, […]
My hair has been thinning out gradually over the past 4-5 years (I am 26 currently), with follicle density and hair thickness both reducing. Recently shaved my head and discovered that I haven’t been thinning as evenly as I thought, I actually have a ton of these tiny patches that are more thin/bald than other […]
This is most likely Alopecia Areata. See a doctor and get treated as it can be reversed.
This looks like Alpecia areata, an autoimmune disease which impacts the hair. You should see a dermatologist and upon examination with a hand microscope he/she will see ‘exclamation mark’ hairs which makes the diagnosis. The a biopsy and a special treatment routine is needed.
The sudden appearance of such a bald spot is suggestive of Alopecia Areata. See a dermatologist.
Dr. Rassman’s Comment: The study is small (15 patients) but the conclusion is significant that microneedling doesn’t help either grow hair or improve existing hairs. I don’t necessarily agree with the message delivered by these authors as we have been seeing considerable hair growth in many young men using microneedlin; nevertheless, I always strive to […]
This is alopecia areata. Sometimes stress can induce this condition which is often inherited. Have you had it before? This should be treated by a dermatologist and should reverse.
They use an instrument called a dermoscope (trichoscope)! It looks at the hair with 50 times magnification. This view shows the value of the instrument, especially when combined with the experience of the person using it. Below is a picture of a patient with alopecia areata showing blunted exclamation mark hairs (black arrows) which makes […]
