A hair transplant doctor I know has noticed that some of her finasteride patients who started taking cannabis, has seen ED appearing. The article states: “What’s good for the goose may be bad for the gander. Specifically, marijuana use may cause erectile dysfunction in men. Of note, erectile dysfunction is the most frequent male sexual disorder.” For men on finasteride and who are using marijuana and have sexual side effects, maybe there is a link that potentiates the ED in finasteride users.
Is it true that fin really does alter people’s mental state (e.g depression) and altered their brain/cognitive functioning as well?
There does seem to be a small number of men who take finasteride and get depressed if they have a history of depression and there are reports of brain fog which has never been successfully explained. Brain fog or depression is a good reason not to be one finasteride.

Noticed my hairline has been receding since I turned 16 and since then it’s just got worse but wondering what treatment I am able to use the now for hair loss as I can’t take finasteride and if minoxidil will be affective long enough until I turn 18
See a good hair doctor and get real good advice from proper diagnosis and treatment. This is too important than to be your own doctor
I’ve been prescribed finasteride by my dermatologist and I’ve been taking it since the 1st of Jan, about more than 3 weeks ago. I’ve also been using Ketoconazole 2% since then for my dandruff & itchiness. Helps alot! So far I’ve been shedding and hair seems thinner, but im being optimistic & hoping for regrowth at the 6-8 month mark. My crown feels like its thickening up, but my temples & the frontal area seem thinner now, could even see my scalp under light…. Anyways, I was just curious if I could use another type of brand of finasteride once the one I’m currently taking is finished in March.
In theory, all drugs cleared by the FDA should be the same as the label states; however, I have heard complaints from some men who switched brands find that the effectiveness has changed. I don’t understand this other that some of these brands could be counterfeits, something more common than most of us realize.
not to sound ignorant, but what benefit do I get from seeing a doctor, other than getting the receipt for finasteride, which I‘ve already done? Or are you thinking about transplants? Different question: I wanna try topical fin, but I‘m not sure where I can get it in Germany, I saw that some people mix it themselves, I don‘t think thats a good idea…I could order it from the US, but that would be too expensive for me in the long run.
A good doctor will give you a Personalized Master Plan for your short and long term hair loss management. It doesn’t necessarily mean a hair transplant. I began aggressively working out 2 years ago when I graduated from school. I was at least working out 5+ days a week and gained around 15 pounds of muscle. With this came seborrhoeic dermatitis – dandruff on every hair follicle (took photos with a hair microscope camera) , DHT itch (especially during cardio), and obviously hair loss/thinning. I stopped working out because my scalp looked and felt inhabitable. I went to over 3 doctors prescribing different meds but in the end finasteride cleared it up. With the combination of Ketoconazole, my hair feels a lot better! I only started this regimen 2 months ago but I’m shedding 90% less. My hair is still very thin… soooo should I start working out again? Should I wait 6 months so the hair gets stronger? I’m leaning towards waiting 6 months but I would love to hear from users who are on Fin + hitting the gym reg
More likely that with age, genetic hair loss may be slowly appearing regardless of what you are doing with workouts. Do whatever you like, life is short!
I buzzed my hair down out of depression for my rapid hair loss in 2020 but simultaneously started treating the condition with finasteride and minoxidil off of a friends recommendation when my buzzed hair came into conversation (oddly I was taking photos purely to keep track of how much I was loosing not to see if treatment was working). I was not expecting much but thought ‘why not’ anyway decided to take pictures every week and yesterday when examining them was shocked to see what looks like a great density and color improvement.
This man took photos along a 10 week course of finasteride and minoxidil showing the slow build-up of hair because of consistent use of these drugs. This shows that you are remarkably sensitive to the combination of minoxidil and finasteride. It’s too early to see enough results at this stage. Maybe in another 6 months the photo comparisons will have more value.
From the photos, it looks like the drug may have stabilized the loss. It is possibly slightly better but most important it is not worse. If you were to stop the medication, I’l bet you will lose a lot of hair.

Thank you for posting my comment on your blog this week. I re-read my comment and thought it may have been unclear so I wanted to clarify a point.
Haber’s original data set showed some peculiar results for the finasteride (F) group versus the control (C). It is very widely accepted that finasteride impairs sexual functioning compared to the control but that was not what Haber found in his study due to the research design. I don’t really know how to put it any more nicely unfortunately. According to the ASEX score, (F) had only 24.3% with some sexual dysfunction versus 38.4% for (C). Libido was similar between groups with (F) showing 22.8% with libido loss and (C) at 22.2%. Reduced sexual functioning was much lower for (F) at 17.8% versus 24.2% for (C).
Keep in mind there is a small amount of missing data in the fin group but it shouldn’t matter that much. Because of the way they excluded patients who stopped taking the drug, likely due to side effects, the data appears to show that on average finasteride improves sexual functioning but that isn’t true because the data isn’t properly randomized. Everybody basically knows that finasteride causes sexual side effects and the data is growing ever stronger that a small group gets persistent side effects. When their data showed the opposite effect and they didn’t stop to question why, they decided to completely ignore the data and conclude “there was no difference in loss of libido, reduced sexual performance, or the number of men with an ASEX score indicating sexual dysfunction.” I’m really not sure how this article got published but the authors appeared to have willfully distorted the data and study design to meet their presumed conclusion.

My experience parallels Dr. Haber’s experience as well as another few dozen doctors with lots of experience. From a first hand perspective, I take it and don’t have ED or libido issue and my son took it and got an increased sexual drive. My patient’s parallel the official reports with about 2-4% ED and libido issues, possibly slightly higher. I have written thousands of prescriptions for finasteride and that makes me more of an authority than those who look in from the sidelines.
