A rare side effect of finasteride is “brain fog” meaning that some people claim that they don’t think clearly. To my knowledge, this has never been reported as a permanent side effect.

Comment by William Rassman, M.D.: I have been prescribing this drug for years. The problems that is discussed below have generally not been seen in most of my patients. Any drug, ANY DRUG, runs some risks when it impacts your body function like hormones, mood, etc… When you take any pill, you must recognize that […]

If you presently have gynecomastia, taking Finasteride will not raise your risk of making it worse more than others your age who do not have gynecomastia. You should see your doctor to find out what you can do about your problem.
I had my hair transplant and took Propecia. I had no hair loss, so a year afterward I stopped the Propecia and felt secure that I would not experience hair loss. Now 1 and a half years later, I am losing hair. Is this delayed shock loss? You must remember that the hair loss process […]
I am 26 years old and had a hair transplant last week and my surgeon recommended that I take Propecia to prevent shock loss. I am afraid to do this because I heard that I won’t get erections on this drug. Is this true? The risks of ED with finasteride is 3-4% while the risks […]
From my 27 years in this business and the 20 or so years since Finasteride has been on the market, I have never seen this drug cause hairline recession. I have seen patients develop recession when the drug did not work well as the battle to control hair loss is lost.
Dr.Rassman, I’m thinking of trying Propecia. In your medical opinion can taking it long term also decrease total testosterone and bioavialble testosterone? I’m worried about it causing problems to my endocrine system. Propecia is used by millions of men everyday and there does not appear to be any issues with their endocrine system. Testosterone levels often rise when […]
You are likely to get thickening of your hair, highly likely as finasteride (Propecia) works well for young men your age.
Before prescribing finasteride, I would first perform a HAIRCHECK test to confirm that you are actually in some early phase of balding. With that in hand, I would prescribe it to an 18 year old without worrying about growth and other developmental issues. My libido has never been strong. Propecia did not change it and I have been on Propecia for 5 years. I noticed little value most recently from the Propecia so I stopped it. To my surprise, My libido became strong, even stronger than it was before I went on the Propecia. Do you have any […]
I am on Propecia and I wrestle and after a match, I notice that my hair is falling out more than at other times. The Propecia seems to help a little. Should I stop wrestling to avoid more hair loss? I never think that one should give up the important things in life to avoid […]
When you stop finasteride for as long as 8 months, you have given your genes control of your balding process. The drug no longer has any impact on your balding. The drug, if you restart it, will probably be less effective and the hair that you lost, is lost.
Finasteride has tissue fixation for 7 days, so if you forgot to take it for 5 days, this should not be a problem.
Finasteride (Propecia) shedding, when it happens, rarely lasts more than 2-3 months. To my knowledge, it is neither good nor bad. When it lasts more than 3 months, it usually is genetic balding not shedding from the finaasteride. I often prescribe finasteride to young men who want it. This type of change (shown here) is […]
