Your history is atypical. Increased libido is an occasional side effect that I have seen in my patients. With regard to your shedding, it generally stops at about 3 months, but you need to go back to your prescribing doctor and have him examine you. I hope that he did a bulk analysis of your […]

If your doctor measured your hair bulk throughout your scalp before you started the medication (something that probably wasn’t available then) or performed miniaturization analysis (which was available), you would now know when/if the drug stops working optimally. Some men have said they’ve seen their hair loss resume after years of taking Propecia, but each […]
The tug of war between hair loss and the treatment of hair loss may be swinging to the hair loss side. It’s not common to have an increase in shedding start 8 months or so after treatment began. Ask your prescribing doctor and see what he/she thinks. Did you get baseline testing of your hair […]
Shedding after starting Propecia isn’t a common occurrence, but I’ve heard reports that it does happen on rare occasions. It is more common with Rogaine (minoxidil) use, though. If we assume that there was some shedding from Propecia, I do not have much faith that those hairs would grow back. The “what if” part about […]
Perhaps you’re not a good responder to Propecia. I don’t know what you’re seeing, so it’s difficult to offer much about that. You’re right about severe thinning not being normal 5 months after starting the medication. You should follow up with your prescribing doctor about it. One thing I am sure of, Propecia doesn’t keep […]
If / when the shedding occurs with either medication (minoxidil or finasteride), it usually lasts no more than 3 months, often less. Be patient, wait it out, and stay the course. I couldn’t tell you which medication is causing it, though.
When finasteride is taken and is effective, it can accelerate the hair cycle and can give you temporary hair loss. We have seen this rarely in people who start the drug and it often disappears in 2-3 months. I would guess (although I have not seen it) that the same phenomenon can be observed if […]
It seems that your genetic predisposition may be winning the battle over Propecia. You should see your doctor who prescribed you the medication and discuss your options. You may consider adding Rogaine or even increasing the Propecia dose* (but again, discuss it with your doctor first). You may even consider having the HairDX Test for […]
I just had a patient who reported gynecomastia along with some sexual side effects from Propecia, and after he reduced his dose to 1/4 of a pill (0.25mg) he was able to continue taking the drug without side effects. It is only a report by one patient though. Most of the patients who have had […]
It could just be a shed situation. Many men will lose hair after a hair cycle is complete (ending in catogen) and not restart another cycle right away due to the genetic situation. This could be what you’re experiencing. I wish that I could be of more help, but you will probably know for yourself […]
There’s two possible problems — the generic you bought overseas could be fake, or your finasteride dosage could just be starting to finally lose the fight to your genes. I often talk about a tug of war of sorts, where Propecia works on one side of the rope and your genes work against it. The […]
Some people report shedding for a month or so when they start Propecia. We postulate that Propecia moves hair on an accelerated hair cycle and that the shedding that is reported is the result. I am not familiar with any permanence with whatever shedding that occurs (if, that is, it really occurs).
I would want to examine you and perform miniaturization studies on you before you went on these drugs and after. Now add to the complexity that you are reporting a failure of the medications to work and want an explanation from me. That’s a very difficult thing for me to do over the Internet. Go […]
Many things are a possibility. The most common cause of hair loss is from your genetic predisposition to losing hair. While Propecia works for male pattern baldness, it does not simply cure it or stop it completely in some men. There are reports of hair loss in the first few months of taking Propecia, which […]
If you had been my patient from the beginning, I would have a reference map of your hair and scalp for miniaturization and I would be able to look at the change over time. By starting from point zero and looking at the measurements two years into it, it will help show what occurs over […]
