I believe that every young man should be on Propecia/finasteride if they have genetic balding. This drug will also offer some protection against shock loss that would be common with a hair transplant, and you should be on the drug at least a couple of weeks prior to having a hair transplant. If your thinning […]

My philosophy on patient care is that a doctor and patient relationship should be a partnership. Both parties should understand one another and treat one another with respect. I found that through the years from my days as a surgeon, mutual respect and partnership have always kept my patients happy. Setting realistic expectations are much […]
Wait out a full 8-10 months before drawing any conclusions. At 6 months, I suspect you will see growth in another month or two.
It sounds like you have two different things happening. At 24 years old, if you thinned after surgery, you probably experienced ‘shock loss’. Do you know if the hair you lost was miniaturized? Miniaturized hairs are the ones at risk for shock loss. Propecia has wiped out most of the hair loss caused by the […]
It is impossible for me to tell you about your hair loss and treatment plans from a simple blog posting. You seem to know about the importance of a Master Plan and miniaturization mapping and with any transplant work that you are considering, anticipating the future direction of the hair loss is critical to balance […]
Clearly, something is wrong here, as most of the hair should have grown by 1 year. The presence of stubble reflects some of the original hairs that are still there which usually fall out as the new hairs come in. If you pull on these stubs, you will find just a hair, no bulbs which […]
I hear and see situations similar to yours nearly everyday. If you were a young man (under 25) and not on Propecia, I would predict the hair loss as almost a certainty. Hair transplant surgery should take into account a Master Plan to plan for future losses. You should not have lost native hair at […]
If you are having reversal of the hair loss with Avodart (dutasteride) in just 5 months, I would finish out a year of treatment before considering hair transplants, as you may just get enough hair from the drug to deal with your problem. If, after a year on the drug, you still have not met […]
I would first wonder if your lost your native hair and suffered shock loss. That would be my first guess. If your doctor was sophisticated and experienced, there should be good growth evident in about 8 months. If there is really no growth, this is a set of questions you need to ask the doctor. […]
It is good that you started using Propecia for your thinning crown hair. Although you don’t think you had improvement with medications, I think it is best for you to continue the Propecia, for you never know how your crown would look if you were not taking the medication. Propecia should be the first line […]
You should have been on finasteride prior to the surgery. Shock loss following a hair transplant is very common in 26 year olds. The hair loss you had may be permanent, but only time will tell. I have never seen ‘skin sagging’ or changes in the character of the skin with any of these drugs.
Be sure that you are now on Propecia. I suspect that with this drug and the loss of the hair that you had, you have probably had the worst of it all. Good luck.
Hair transplantation in women is often unwise unless there are certain situations where the transplant can actually benefit the patient and the donor hair is normal. Many women do not have normal donor hair, impacted by miniaturization, which means that the hair will grow in weak and most of the miniaturized hairs will not grow. […]
Occasional redness that lasts beyond 2 months is seen on men who are histamine positive to a scratch test. This person will eventually see the redness fade, but it could take up to 6 months to get there. With regard to shock hair loss (that sounds like what you experienced), in men this hair does […]
Patients react differently to their newly transplanted hair. In some people, the transplanted hairs completely fall out before regrowing after a few months. In rare times, they grow and keep growing after a hair transplant. The final results of a transplant must be assessed no sooner than 8 months from the time of surgery, because […]
