Talk to your surgeon about how he/she best treats post-operative issues (including itching). What you are asking about is a steroid that can be used on a limited basis, but your doctor will want to know what he/she is treating. There’s a lot of other things that could go wrong with the surgery that I’d […]

Normally, I’d tell a patient or reader that if you believe your medication is not genuine because you get it from India, I would suggest you buy it from a reputable company in the United States. But you got your finasteride from Costco in the US, so I’d expect it would be fine. Plus, there […]
I randomly get these questions and reports from my patients, but I do not see any pattern or change as patients switch from brand name Propecia (1mg finasteride) to the 5mg generic finasteride split into four pieces. It is very difficult to pinpoint and establish a direct relationship, as most patients are very happy with […]
Thank you for sharing your story. Sex vs hair… it’s a tough choice for some men! Granted, many men that take Avodart (dutasteride) likely won’t see the severe effects like you saw, but until the medication and its risks are fully studied I can do not advocate the use of Avodart in my practice. It’s […]
Shedding occurs when the hair cycle is impacted. In your case, Avodart (dutasteride) may have caused the shedding, but it should be very short term — less than 3 months or so is my guess.
When switching from Propecia (finasteride) to Avodart (dutasteride), I wouldn’t think that any waiting period is needed. I’m not sure how informed your decision in switching medications is since dosing information hasn’t been established when taking Avodart to treat hair loss, but since both are prescription medications I’d hope these are things you and your […]
It doesn’t sound crazy! There should be no difference between the brands of minoxidil, as long as the % is the same. So if you switch to a 5% minoxidil from your local pharmacy, it should produce the same results as the Dr Reddy’s brand you were using.
If you are taking 1/4 of the 5mg finasteride pill, it will work identical to Propecia. I wouldn’t spend too much time worrying about it, so long as you got the 5mg generic from a trustworthy pharmacy. If you are taking a counterfeit pill, then you will lose the benefits quickly and start seeing hair […]
I don’t know what to tell you. If you’re itching with minoxidil, stop using it, but you run the risk of losing the benefits the medication gave you. Propecia won’t keep hair grown by minoxidil, and vice versa. Propecia works to prevent or slow down the balding in the man who has started to lose […]
Itching while using minoxidil may reflect an allergy to the drug, though it is interesting that it developed after using it for a year. Which strength were you using? Perhaps you could try a lesser strength. As for the best way to tackle hair loss — well, I’ve already written a book on it (Hair […]
I think you are very well informed and I agree with your doctor that you should try to come off the finasteride to see if there is an allergy, but the likelihood of the drug causing of your itching is low. You might want to shorten the period you are off the drug to 2 […]
Taking generic finasteride 5mg and dividing in to quarters is the same as taking Propecia (finasteride 1mg). There should be no difference at all between the two, except for cost savings and the requirement of cutting the 5mg generic pill. I might just be under the wrong impression, but from the brief description of your […]
Proscar and Propecia are both the drug finasteride just at different doses. Switching between them is no problem at all. The difference in the 1.25mg dose and the 1mg dose is relatively insignificant.
No, I don’t believe you’ll see a shed from switching. Most people who switch from Propecia to Proscar do it for economic reasons, as the 5mg pill is substantially less expensive (particularly the generic 5mg, since there is no generic 1mg legally available in the U.S.). I wish the drug company, Merck, would get that […]
You need to take both of your animals to a vet and yourself to a doctor. Why would you try lice shampoos or scabies medicine without knowing you have lice or scabies? Those shampoos can do more damage than good if you don’t have lice or scabies. You need a good diagnosis before trying something […]
