Taking Propecia for only four months is a relatively short time. I would wait out a full year before concluding what will happen to you. Get your hair mapped out for miniaturization to get detailed metrics for what is happening on your head. When this is done before and after starting Propecia (after 12 months […]

If the Propecia was in a sealed bottle, it would probably be ok. I won’t recommend taking it, but I do recommend reading this article from Newsweek published a couple weeks back — Do You Take Expired Medications?. Contact your prescribing doctor for the final word on what you should do. With regard to your […]
The only way I can recommend to minimizing your progressive hair loss — and yes, it is progressive, because that is the nature of the beast — is to take finasteride 1mg (assuming you are a male). If you do not take this medication, you will most likely continue to bald, because that is what […]
Propecia (finasteride 1mg) will give you the benefit of slowing down futher hair loss or even reversing some of the loss. It compliments your hair transplant surgery, especially the hair on your crown area. The transplanted hair will stay, but the hair around it may still be genetically determined to fall out. This is why […]
That is a very good question. In my practice I generally tell my patients (if they are experiencing any negative sexual side effects which occur in about 1% of patients) to cut the pill in half and and then take a half pill daily. It is better to do this than take one pill every […]
That is an interesting question. Beard hair develops as you go through puberty as a secondary sex characteristic and DHT is one of the agents that cause its growth at puberty and beyond it. I have heard reports from a few patients that beard growth has been slowed by finasteride as was a maturing hairline […]
Many doctors prescribe medicines for off label use. Proscar (finasteride 5mg) is a medication marketed for benign prostatic hypertrophy. Propecia (finasteride 1mg) is a medication marketed for androgenic hair loss (male pattern hair loss). They are the exact same drug with different strength dosing. That being said, if someone (or a computer, such as your […]
Medications to treat bipolar disorder (such as lithium) can cause hair loss. Just because you stop the offending medication, it does not guarantee that the hair will come back. More importantly, you should discuss any change in medication with your prescribing doctor. Sometimes, these drugs precipitate the genetic hair loss process. A good dermatologist (or […]
I hope that I am correct to assume that you are a male. Hot flashes are mostly seen in menopausal women and in men following castration or using anti-androgen medications. Hot flash is a result of an imbalance of sex hormones. In studies with Propecia, no clinically meaningful changes were detected in the levels of […]
You should not be experimenting with drugs. Clindamycin is an antibiotic and using strong steroids can have a balding side effect. To my knowlege there have been no clinical studies showing synergistic benefits of using special shampoos and Propecia.
There are no FDA approved topical DHT blockers. If Propecia kills your libido, try a half pill a day and then if that does not work, try a quarter of a pill per day. There will be some benefits for DHT block at that lower dose. Just like Propecia, you will lose the effect of […]
Shock loss after a hair transplant occurs in some patients and it is best prevented by taking Propecia (which I prescribe to everyone having a hair transplant just to minimize this possibility). It is probably related to the degree of miniaturized or weak hairs that were in active loss phase when you had your transplant. […]
Hair loss can occur in stages, spurts of hair loss and then a quieter period. Frontal hair loss is difficult to reverse, but Propecia (assuming you have genetic hair loss) does slow the process down. I have seen many men who were losing hair rapidly in the front, then go on Propecia and see the […]
Finasteride (Propecia/Proscar) is a DHT type 2 receptor blocker which does not have any association with the pancreas, therefore I would expect that it should not lead to Type I diabetes. The drug company (Merck) would have recognized any such association if it would have been detected and considering the number of diabetics in the […]
Avodart (dutasteride) should be reserved for those who do not respond to Propecia (finasteride). It is an off-label use, which means that the FDA does not authorize Avodart’s use for hair loss. In most people, the difference should be non-existent, but for the few who are unable to get Propecia to work, Avodart may have […]
