“Long-term adverse symptoms of men who used oral finasteride against androgenic alopecia have been recently described as post-finasteride syndrome (PFS).” These men report that the sexual side effect after taking finasteride seem to hold for them for long periods of time. The frequency of this finding shows that it is not common as most men […]

Minoxidil is commonly used world-wide a an inexpensive solution to hair loss and it seems to work for men and women. Minoxidil was originally used for the treatment of high blood pressure but it was not a reliable drug for this purpose. When used for the treatment of hair loss, it can reverse the hair […]
There’s a few key bullet points I need to make here: I do not believe there is much data for women taking finasteride to show that it is effective in treating hair loss. Finasteride is not FDA approved for women, as it can cause unknown side effects (this includes birth defects if a woman takes […]
I am not trying to be harsh, but why are you asking me, a doctor you do not know, if a medication you were prescribed by your doctor is safe to take? I sense a lack of communication with you and your doctor. Finasteride is not approved for women in the United States, because it […]
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) can produce some masculine hormonal changes, including hair loss on the scalp and hair growth in areas like the face (i.e. upper lip) and some body hair growth. You need to get your hair mapped out for miniaturization to outline just what is happening to your scalp hair, where on the […]
Dr. Robert Bernstein (Hair Restoration Surgeon in New York) was kind enough to supply a thorough answer to this question for you… Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), originally called Stein-Leventhal disease, represents a number of conditions where ovulation is inhibited and, as a result, the ovaries become cystic and secrete more androgens than normal. The most […]
I have just stopped using finasteride after 1 year of it with sexual side effects. I am worried about the long term effects. What about those who don’t get better, doctor? What is the chance that I will be ok after a few weeks or so? It could take a few months to get back […]
Post finasteride syndrome is reported between 0.1 – 1% and some reports are higher. In my practice and in the practice of a dozen other doctor who, combined, easily have written prescriptions for over 200,000 young men, have not seen PFS because when sexual side effects happen, we stop the medications. Look at this link: […]
I’ve been taking finasteride for 3 years without any side effects but started reading about post finasteride syndrome (PFS). Is It real? Should i worry about It? If you are not having side effects of a sexual nature, there is nothing to worry about.
Post Finasteride Syndrome is very uncommon. In my practice of 27 years, I have prescribed this drug on tens of thousands of men, although I did hear reports of sexual side effects in between 2-4% of these patients, I have never had a single case of PFS discussed with me. I have very good relationships […]
Comment by William Rassman, M.D.: I have been prescribing this drug for years. The problems that is discussed below have generally not been seen in most of my patients. Any drug, ANY DRUG, runs some risks when it impacts your body function like hormones, mood, etc… When you take any pill, you must recognize that […]
I have seen some dramatic results with Propecia, but I would not say a complete reversal. I do not know the exact issues that are referred to as this post-finasteride syndrome. I realize there are anecdotal stories from people on the Internet who claim Propecia ruined their lives forever, but in the 15 or so […]
There may be a connection with your loss of libido and the drug finasteride. The real life incidence of sexual side effects associated with Propecia is about 1 to 2 percent. These side effects are reversible once you stop the medication, and despite what you may read on the Internet, I have yet to see […]
BTW, you are very ignorant about PFS. There are many cases of men who developed side effects and stopped the drug immediately, but they have not reversed years later. You haven’t even read the basic literature yet you so confidently opine on subjects of which you have no idea. You claim you have never seen […]
I’ve been told by several doctors that Fin isn’t a good idea because I have IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). Finasteride should not impact Irritable Bowl Syndrome. It might be worth a try. There is a balance between benefits and risks which only you can assess.
