We’re taking a week off from posting new content — our first break in almost 6 years — so we’re using this opportunity to repost some older articles that didn’t get the attention they deserved the first time around. (Originally published on April 5, 2007.) — I’ve put together a nice list of things to […]

Perhaps you are misunderstanding what the auto-cloning technique with the ACell product is all about. The research we’re conducting is basically plucking out hair from a donor scalp area (where hairs are considered immune to genetic balding), applying the ACell products, and transplanting to an area of scalp where there is balding. We are not […]
The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) site has posted a great comparison of the strip harvesting and FUE techniques. Here’s the first paragraph from the article: Read the full text — Comparison between Strip Harvesting and Follicular Unit Extraction: A Fair and Balanced View The article discuss the donor area, scarring, graft survival, […]
Yes, harvesting the areas you are talking about can work. It is very difficult to do and the yield will probably be less, because hair densities tend to drop on the sides of the head.
Shock loss occurs in the recipient area, so the method of extracting the donor hair is not impacted. The best way to reduce the risks for shock loss is the use of Propecia (finasteride 1mg) to be taken orally prior to the surgery and for the subsequent 6-8 months.
There has been considerable research on taking hair follicles, freezing them and trying to ‘wake them up’ for reimplanting later. Failure is very high and after a few weeks, there is virtually a 100% failure rate. It appears that freezing them with the various techniques available will kill the hair follicles.
I’ve put together a nice list of things to consider if you’re interested in having a hair transplant, particularly when comparing the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique and the Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT / strip) technique. FUE pros There will not be a detectable scar in donor area. Of course the scar will be present […]
It is good that you started using Propecia for your thinning crown hair. Although you don’t think you had improvement with medications, I think it is best for you to continue the Propecia, for you never know how your crown would look if you were not taking the medication. Propecia should be the first line […]
I think that you must put the various surgeries that you may want into a Master Plan for your hair loss. If you are not going to be very bald, then an FUE solution is not an unreasonable one. The long term yields for an FUE may have to do with donor density, but for […]
It would be malpractice for a surgeon to do beard to scalp hair transplants in a 25 year old. If you are committed, please do the standard thing and do not invent your own surgery. The price you will pay will have nothing to do with money.
Both techniques should give you real follicular units, but often the FUE in many doctor’s hands do not give real follicular units because they are transplanted as they are taken out (complete follicular units, more than one follicular unit, or parts of a follicular unit). Strip harvesting is better in most people, simply because the […]
The answer here varies with the many attributes of hair that include: density hair thickness hair character / texture hair color and contrast to skin You can use possibly 90% of the donor hair if your characteristics from the above are good. If they aren’t, the actual number may be well below 50% of the […]
To answer this question would be mostly speculation, as each case is different. If you already had strip harvesting, then at some point if you needed more hair, FUE can harvest hair above and below the point where the strip was harvested. So, yes there should be more hair that can be harvested in combination […]
Age: 28: I was quoted 3800 grafts (3000 scalp, 600 chest and 200 beard) for the front and another surgery for the crown (which idk how many grafts it will still need). Thoughts on: Frontal density regarding 3800 Would the donor area hold up for 7000 grafts overall? I won’t take any medications but considering […]
There is a misconception that many patients and surgeons. They believe they must replace the density of the recipient area in the balding area when having (or doing) a hair transplant. Nothing could be further from the truth. Too many Reddit patients are wasting their donor supply by using too many grafts to cover Class […]
