You can use a video microscope and look at your own hair. These run about $200-400 or so and are often sold online (price varies per vendor and tool used). I like the ProScope (the USB version for computers is more costly than the version that connects directly to the TV) and have them in […]

I think I understand your question. You want to know if the mapping of your scalp for miniaturization will indicate your eventual hair loss pattern? The mapping of miniaturization will show you more about your balding pattern than you can see with your naked eye. Most likely, you would progress to a higher Norwood classification […]
I can’t force doctors to use microscopic evaluation of the scalp to determine degrees of miniaturization, but the mapping is certainly the best way to determine degrees of hair loss, rather than having your doctor essentially just eyeballing the problem. Perhaps you could/should print out our this page — Miniaturization and Hair Loss – More […]
I don’t understand why others don’t do it. One does not have to take pictures, just make an assessment of the degree of miniaturization by the anatomy of the scalp. I am sure Dr. Bernstein examined your hair with the densitometer, which is a manually held instrument and can give the exact same information. I […]
First and foremost, you should educate yourself on hair transplant surgery and hair loss. Just as you have found this site, you can find tons of information on the rest of the web. Just double check sources and make sure the information is credible. You can also use NewHair.com for extensive medical information on hair […]
No, you do not have to cut your hair to get your hair mapped out for a miniaturization analysis.
Hair loss is a progressive process so the answer to #1 is yes, more areas will occur as you get older. There are four causes of hair loss (1) genes, (2) hormones, (3) stress and (4) time. Stress accelerates genetic hair loss in young men and may not reverse with drugs like minoxidil or Propecia. […]
The process of genetic balding is produced by DHT (Dihydrotestosterone). If there was no DHT, balding would not occur. The way to prove this is to remove the testicles. If genetic balding had not already started, it would certainly not start after removing the testicles. This has been shown classically when one of two identical […]
I believe that Propecia can reverse miniaturization in some people and that would easily explain the results we see in young men (in particular) who have increased fullness, not just associated with hair count. The best hair that responds to Propecia are those that are not near the end stage of miniaturization. This does not […]
I could have helped you more if I knew precisely what Extreme Hair Therapy is. Just from looking at the Hair Club website, it appears to be some shampoo, conditioner, herbal pills, and topical minoxidil. Assuming that you have a high degree of miniaturization in the frontal area, the best treatment is finasteride 1mg daily […]
You are doing it right. The key is to get your hair mapped out for miniaturization to find out if you have a Class 3Vertex pattern developing, something not uncommon in a balding 32 year old. A good doctor should be able to diagnose and map your head with growth that is as short as […]
There is no evidence that I’ve seen one way or the other that the Laser Comb will help with miniaturization. I did review the studies on the Laser Comb on the product’s official website and developed some opinions worth reading. See Analyzing the Results of the HairMax Laser Comb for the analysis of the Laser […]
The pull test is not good for diagnosis of miniaturization and genetic hair loss. The degree of shaft thickness change is what mapping will show. Hairs that are in the early phase of miniaturization will not pull out. Those that do pull out, may be the hairs about to go into their telogen cycle.
Show your doctors the piece on miniaturization that I wrote, Miniaturization: Critical to the Master Plan for Hair Loss. They should easily be able to do what I described. Sometimes, a little push and education from a patient to the doctors goes a long way.
Here’s essentially a summary of what I’ve written in the past about miniaturization. This is just about as to-the-point as I can get with what the miniaturization mapping is and why it is important. For more in-depth text on miniaturization and mapping, please see: Miniaturization: Critical to the Master Plan for Hair Loss. — Miniaturization […]
