Prednisone and Hair Loss in Women
I have crohns disease and I went to the hospital and stayed for about 3 wks. I was given mega doses of prednisone intravenously. Shortly after I got out of the hospital, my hair started gradually falling out. (I am a 53 yr.old african american female) I eventually cut it all off. Will it ever grow back or is it doubtful?
Hair loss is not a published side effect of prednisone except in men with male pattern balding. You need to have a full evaluation for the presence of other diseases. Assuming you are healthy and do not have the female version of genetic hair loss, you styand a good chance to grow back your hair in one to two years. If there is a disease process that is causing the hair loss (e.g. thyroid problems), then the cause must be addressed first. For example, women may get hair loss with pregnancy and these women almost always grow the hair back, usually in less than one year (can take up to two years) after the baby is born.
Hi,
I am currently on prednisone and have been taking 40 mg for many months now on 30mg. I was told by my doctor that my hair loss, since July, is due to the meds. But, it is stated here in the site that this drug only impacts men w/hair loss and women. Please clarify this for me. Is there a small percentage that loose hair on this drug ?? I may be on it for a few more months and need to know this. Also if I am correct , if it’s the drug than once off it than hair would grow back and be back fully in a yr or so ??
thanks
Optic Neuritis -3 days IV 1 Gram prednisone, then stair step down over 3 weeks now loosing all my hair not pattern baldness

I am a 41 year old African American female that has always had very thick and full hair. I started prednisone in 8/2010 to stave off heat reactions from the Sun because my body does not absorb the Sun’s Vitamin D. I noticed in March my hair starting to thinning and now I have bald spots. I don’t know what to do, I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS BEFORE and have to take the pills or I swell and look like I have a severe and painful case of sunburn.
HELP….I don’t care what they say this does not just affect men.
