Rogaine Foam on the Temples Has Caused Shedding All Over My Scalp
I am a 21 year old male who has recently (6 weeks ago) started using Rogaine foam. I had noticed the hair at my temples thinning but the hair elsewhere on my head I was happy with- it has been the same thickness (I THINK) since I was 16.
I have a couple quick questions which I would be extremely grateful that you answered to put my mind at ease!
Firstly, will 5% minoxidil foam help this type of balding? I have only been applying the foam to my temple area. Secondly, since starting the treatment, my hair has been shedding more ALL OVER. This has lasted the whole 6 weeks (getting slightly better now). I have noticed this is said to be a good sign but should the shedding last this long and is it normal for the minoxidil to affect the hair I haven’t applied it too? Finally, the texture of my hair has changed all over since beginning treatment, feeling more dry and lifeless. Is this normal or should I be worried?
Thank You!
Rogaine Foam is meant for use on the top, crown, or vertex area of the scalp. It is not likely to work on the front temples. I realize many people apply the foam to the front areas, but it will have minimal effect (if any).
Rogaine should not cause hair loss or shedding of hair all over the scalp, though it may cause some initial shedding in the first month, as I have heard some people mention this phenomenon. With continued use it should grow back.
I am not aware of changes in texture of hair being a common side effect, though I suppose the alcohol in the treatment could be the culprit.
Did you mean temples or the corners of the hairline? Because nothing is going to stop maturing of your hairline. I found some regrowth with rogaine foam on frontal areas oddly. It worked wherever I put it (even on my hands at first!).
The dryness is similar to any foam or mousse you apply to the hair with an alcohol base – it dries the hair out. If you try to get as much as possible into the scalp and avoid running it into your hair itself it isn’t bad at all. Certainly better than the old rogaine liquid spray.
Well everyone in my family had great heads of hair I know as far as great-grandfathers. My father started to lose it around 30 something hes a NW 5/6 at 67, my mom’s brother in his late 20s hes a NW5 at 43 (both men had no MPB family history) and me at 21. It’s funny how genes work! I wonder where I’ll end up…so far Propecia kept my hair for 4 years.
oops sorry wrong post lol
Yes the minoxidil changes your hairs appearance. I used minoxidil for years and it made my hair look dry and unhealthy. I received a lot of unsolicited advice about conditioning my hair. Eventually I went to Propecia and stopped minoxidil for years. My hair quality was excellent. Unfortunately I had the persistent sexual side effects with the Propecia and went on a 6 month holiday to get my sex drive back. During that time I used minoxidil and once again my hair looks brassy, dry, and lifeless. It is a trade off. I wear my hair long so the drying effect is more noticeable. It also causes itching and dandruff. What I do to try to keep my hair!
