Tissue-Engineered Whole Organ Transplant
BBC – Windpipe transplant breakthrough
What are your thoughts on using this to transplant donor hair? I understand it is not a straight forward procedure but do you believe that it may open the door for a hairloss treatment?
I believe these technologies are promising. The application to hair transplantation is on the horizon, but there is nothing immediate. Tissue engineering is at its infancy and there are only a few applications that I know of at this time (cartridge for the knee, skin for burns, tendons). These tissues reflect one type of cell line while a hair has many types, including skin, fat, glands, nerves, and blood vessels. This makes an engineered hair ’tissue’ a very complex problem that is years away from a practical solution.
