What Can I Do for Smelly, Oily Hair?
Hi Dr. Rassman,
I’m a 18 year old male and my hair is really oily and I mean REALLY OILY I take a shower every night but once I wake up in the morning its already really greasy and it smells, this started 4 years ago when I started High School I went to a regular doctor about 2 years ago so he could check out my scalp but he said it was fine. I have used Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Oil Shampoo, Head & Shoulders Hair Endurance for Men, Selsun Blue and Suave Clarifying Shampoo in the past couple of years and have have little to no success, so I was wondering if you can help me with my “smelly hair syndrome” as they call it I will really appreciate the help.
Thank You for your time
It’s possible there’s some shampoo out there that might help, but I couldn’t specify which one help for your particular case. A good dermatologist might be able to help you.
There is a pretty good article on this “Smelly Hair Syndrome” available here.
smelly hair syndrome as you put it can often tell you a lot about your overall health and scalp health. Here are some things you can definitely try: massage coconut oil into your scalp, leave overnight if possible, and then wash out next morning.
Try this a few times before you give up but i have read that it does work.
If you can’t be bothered with oils then i have another solution for you. Try bicarbonate soda (available from any supermarket), put about a tsp in a mug and fill mug up with water, make sure it all dissolves. pour this over your scalp and give it a really good massage as the bicarb will help lift dirt, grease and odour related problems. once massaged, wash your head thoroughly. try and use cold water if possible.
next, get hold of some apple cider vinegar (normal vinegar will do if you are unable to find the apple version). make a mix of 1/10th vinegar to 9/10th cold water and pour this all over your head. yes it will smell, but the smell disappears once your head/hair dries, and it will probably not be a bad smell like the one you currently have. do this bicarb and vinegar washing 2 or 3 times or everyday if you want and you will see that it will make a big difference, if not cure your problem altogether.
For anyone who underestimates the power of this combination, i used it to get rid of 95% of my brothers scalp psoriasis. over the course of 4 months he now has no major psoriasis issues, itching has massively reduced, sores all gone and his scalp less sensitive. we use shampoo once every 6 weeks just to give the scalp and hair a good clean down but always wash the scalp off with vinegar at the end. Also remember that you need to be eating healthy diet to have healthy scalp/hair. you could try something like cinnamon tea which will boost your immune system and sort out a lot of related issues in the process. click on my name for more info
