What If I Take 5mg of Finasteride to Treat Hair Loss?
Pretty basic question i think:
I have a prescription for finasteride 5mg which i usually divide into fours. This, of course means on a normal day i take about 1.25 mg. My question is, if due to time constraints or other circumstances i find myself not having time to split the pill and i take a 5mg pill, what side effects can i expect? are there any at all? Will it speed up the process that is already happening since i’m using the medication regularly? Thanx for the response.
Taking finasteride 5mg (Proscar) daily will not have any benefit over the finasteride 1mg (Propecia) in the treatment of androgenic alopecia (AGA). The increased dosage was studied when Propecia was released by the FDA. The higher dose will have an increased potential for side effects (there is a list of potential side effects for 5mg of finasteride here.)
My advice to you would be to just take the 30 seconds out of your day to split the 5mg pill into four pieces to get the proper dose. There are pill cutters available at your local pharmacy, and even a sharp knife would do the job just fine.
Try this. When I get a new bottle of 5mg finasteride, I immediately take it to the bathroom, with sharp kitchen knife and cutting board. I carefully cut the 7 pills into halfs first and then fourths. Then, with all pills in the bottle at once and residue washed away in a few minutes, I have good quarter-pills, a clean environment for my girlfriend to be in without worry, and I only need do this once per month. Best wishes!
