Why Was I Born With a Bald Spot That Won’t Regrow Hair?
Ive had a bald patch on the left side of my head since birth. It has decreased in size over the years but my doctor has said it will never fully grow hair. I was wondering what caused this and what other alternatives there are.
I cannot tell you why you have a bald patch that you were born with, but think of it like a birth mark. It is what it is.
In most cases, the easy solution to this is with a small hair transplant to the area.
I was born with a huge one- on the top of my head no less! When I was 5, my parents insurance covered what is called a scalp reduction. This is a surgery in which they cut the bald spot out aand sewed my hair back together. Very painfull. It was pted to be done again when I was 17, but the spot was not large enough to be covered by insurance; they covered it before because of sunburning. needless to say, it really stinks to grow up with someone always saying, ” your going bald dude”. Fortunately, I am 34 and am not going bald. I’m at the age where it looks semi natural. People say it’s not “that” noticeable, but thet’s crap. The reason for it has eluded me. Birthmark- I don’t think so. I have been all around, and have met a ton of people in my life and the only people that have a spot resembling mine are on the side of their head. One theory is that that part of the skull was not fully developed at birth. This may be true considering I was born jaundice at 7 and a half months. I think what is more probable; considering the others I’ve met with this condition are all in the saame age group-1977 babies, is that some chemical in some product they sold back then did it. I have seen babies with fetal alcohol syndrome with this, but they are severe cases; not people who blog on the internet. Anyway, I’m on the search same as you brother or sister or whoever you may be. Your not alone, their are like 15 of us out there! L.O.L.
Hey I’m sixteen and curntly have the same make it has not been operated on yet asides from a biopsy would be curious if you know more about this
Wow, I too am like you Jay, I was born in 1977 in UK and I have bald spot where my crown should – we are both crownless!!! I too had the surgery you describe. I had 2 as a youngster and so glad I did, pictures of me beforehand as a toddler make me look like Friar Tuck!! Luckily being female I have always had long hair so can tie it back on windy days but it has always bothered me but never got the final op. My head is very bumpy and covered in scars and the area where the spot is is very flat. Is yours too? I get a lot of headaches so recently had an MRI to rule out the nasties and it was not mentioned in my results that there was any malformation of my skull. I would love to know what caused this but the year of birth does make you wonder……?? Did you mum smoke during her pregnancy with you? I know mine did as they just didn’t know the dangers back then but other than that I think everything was pretty normal during pregnancy and birth. I was born very quickly so not sure if this made any difference? Be good to hear more from you!!
i have the same problem,im Katie from Europe, kids make fun of me in elementary and high school because of this,i had a small bald on the right side of my head.it was so embarrassing, kids laugh at me and call me bald head. but now im in a different environment, with different people nobody tease me anymore.im so thankful that im not thee only one, thanks
I too have this issue. I was born in the US in 1974. I have seen other people with this bald spot and its usually around the same area. I have seen kids with it too, so it is still happening. I thought maybe the doctor who delivered me pulled to hard and caused some sort of permanent damage to that area. Just wondering, anyone who has this, were you born natural or c-section?
Allllll Natural ??
Hi my son is 4 he was born with it too. At 5 mouths he stared to get seagurz doctor sayed it was eplapice. I dont beleve that. He started to talk at 9 mouths he smart he get headcks too. Plez this is somthing more then wat the doctors say.
i dont no why but i was born with this small bald spot on top of my head to the left and my mom said the nurse said i was just born like tht and it’s natural sometimes but i hate having to part my hair the same way all the time . i want to get rid of it so bad!
I had a surgery in the second grade and wonder if it was what jay described. Now I don’t have a bald spot but basically a swirl on my head. It’s very noticeable and always style my hair to cover it up. I’m so self conscious about it and nothing I say or do to my parents about it helps.
I too have a small bald spot on the back left side. I was born during the mid 80’s though.mine is red in color and bumpy.i do not cover mine and make up funny stories when people ask.i once made a younger cousin belive I was born with three eyes, but doctors had to remove it because I couldn’t tell if I was coming or going lol. I’ve read a lot into these being death wounds from past life’s. If you believe that type of stuff.
I to have a bald spot on the left side of my head as big as a fifty cent coin, no red just no hair. I hate it, been teased a lot, can’t put my hair in a pony tail and when the wind blows very visible. I feel so uncomfortable and embarrassed. Doctor said its a birthmark and hair will never grow there. It’s not heredity, I was born a natural birth I guess I just have to deal with. :(
I have had this bald bumpy pink patch on my left side above my ear… I used to tell kids that’s where my batteries went and I was a robot.. I really want to sort of before I start to get older and my hair starts to thin can anyone help please!!
I was born with a pink bald hole on my head on top of my left side of my head I was born in 1971 it wasn’t c section , sometimes it hurts on that bald spot, my sister used to make fun of me and tell all my friends to make me embarrassed
hello,
my daughter was just born with a big bald spot on the top of her head. it s obvious that the skin of the skull wasn’t mature , and the reconstruction doctor recommended a surgery at age of 3 years to remove the bald skin.
is this operation efficient?
thank u
It’s the same for me, on the left size, a little smaller that a quarter. I was born in the early 2000s, and my parents never did anything about it. It’s gotten slightly smaller from when I was little, but it is still embarrassing. No one else in my family has ever had something like this. I mainly just try to grow out my hair and part I in a way so it’s hidden, but in a couple of weeks I’m donating at least 10 inches of hair, and I’m not exactly sure what to do. When I turn 18 I plan to get a tattoo there, if not to feel more secure about that spot, but other than that I have no idea what to do.
I was born in 2000 and I have the exact same problem as you!
I was born in 1974 and have the same thing. A bald spot about the size of a quarter on my left side slightly above my left temple. I’ve seen a few people with this in the same area. My mom said she thinks the doctor caused this when he used the forceps to assist in delivering me. Who knows. I’m 41 y/o and to this day, this has been very embarrassing for me. i basically let my hair grow a bit longer in that area to cover it. God forbid its windy or i sweat. LOL Finding a barber is always difficult. I was told by a skin doctor that with treatment, I might be able to grow hair in that area. Never tried. I was also told by a naturopathic doctor to rub the area with a piece of wool until its almost raw, then cut a garlic clove in half and rub the garlic on it a few times a day. He said when it heels, it will start hair growth. He also said to keep repeating the process. I tried a few times and I noticed a few new hairs but stopped doing it. Too painful and the scab looked worse than the bald spot. I think I’ll just deal with it. Let me know if anyone has had any luck with regrowth and how.
My son has the same small spot on the left side near the temple. It has a name : triangular alopecia. I’ve been to dermatologists as well as regular docs and they do nothing and say nothing. They keep sending us all over. Even went to Hans Weimann. they want to transplant hair in this small spot for $7000. Not happening right now, he’s 15 yrs. old.
I also have this bad spot from birth.. about the size of a quarter on the top of my head. I was born in 1985 but just like you the doctors used forceps . I have hated this all my life it is bumpy and sometimes hurts there is a little red mark on it right now maybe a little pimple or irritatis n I don’t know .. but Jorge .. we might have gotten this from the forceps .. since we both were told that they used them ..
*irritation
Hi, has anyone found out about this yet?? I too have a bald patch at the top left side of my head. Being a female and with it being on the side, I have managed to hide it but when I tie my hair up or the wind blows you can see it. I was born in 1987.
Hi, my son was born in 2010 with a bald patch on his crown. It is bigger than a fifty pence coin and very friar tuck like! No one has any answers to why it is there, I have met with a plastic surgeon who recommended tissue/balloon expansion for my son when he is around 7yrs old. I will go ahead with this as I dont want him being picked on. has anyone else been advised to do this?
I was born in 1978 w a slight bald spot in San Antonio, tx. I had blond hairs grow in that spot and later my hair turned all brown. I have the most grey hairs in that spot now. Maybe a product my water ate while pregnant or chemical spill nearby.
I was born in 1999(I’m 16) and I’ve got two bald patches on my head, I’m very self conscious about this and I always have my hair in a pony tail to hide them. Over the years they have gotten slightly smaller but are still very noticeable, I want to be a normal teenager with my hair down but feel too worried that I will be bullied for it. Are there any operations or home remedies that can get rid of my patches?
Hi, I too have a bald spot on my upper left side of my head, I was born 1988 and it has never bothered me and I’ve always been able to hide it very well, but I do wish I knew why, or how
It’s called triangular alopecia. Look it up. Not sure what can be done about it. My son has it too. I guess hair transplants. I was thinking of using the Rogaine on him to try . Have you used that on your spot yet?
I was born in 1986 with a bald patch on the upper right side of my head. It’s been an awful life growing up. I was constantly picked on and called ugly, hideous, etc. Even at church, a place where your supposed to find solitude. It was so hard to make friends and even harder to date. When your own mom says that you’ll never have a girlfriend because of that patch, what do you even say to that. I hated going out in public and still do. Shaving doesn’t seem like an option because my head shape is really crooked. It’s exhausting everyday trying to act normal when your mind torments you everyday. I kept hoping that it would go away when I was older but my mind seems to be in a continuous loop of negativity.
I might be the oldest responding to this, but I was born with the bald spot on the top left side of my head. I was born in 1965. I’m here in the US.
It is my understanding from my surgeon, one of the causes of this is how we laid in the womb. Either our bodies are repairing what it thinks it’s damage by adding extra skin (was my case) or being on that same area for so long never allowed the hair to grow in the first place. It stunted it.
I went through the surgery 3 years ago. Yes it is painful, but with it. Going through school during the time I went was very hard and I got into a few fights. My hair was pitch black, I had a bald spot and I have hazel eyes. Not having the surgery done can cause more problems then having it done, because it leaves the spot open to sunburn which could lead to cancer. So think about it.
My mother did not smoke or drink during her pregnancy. I would like to know how many of you, if any, suffer from migraines. If it’s a coincidence. Hope it helps.
One more thing, there are no home remedies and the surgery is usually in office taking approximately 1/2 at most of its not a large spot. I would also recommend waiting until your done growing so you won’t have any other issues to contend with.
I think having it done at an early age might make the hair grow in an odd way, if you wait until you are done growing, they will fix it around the hair growth.
Don’t scrub the spot and hope hair grows, there are no follicles, no roots and all you will end up with is a sore head.
Hey John, my name is also John. I just want you to buck up. I have had the same bald spot my entire life and was born in ’93. It is annoying, but you have to find the confidence to deal with it within yourself. Of course you could grow your hair out and comb over it, which is how I deal with it sometimes, but at some point you have to realize that life is more than was external. I know its hard to do, and I’m sure we all struggle with it. Despite this, its a necessity. Also, you need a more supportive environment. If the people you are around make you feel like they won’t accept you for who you are, you need to be around new people. This is especially true if the reason that they judge is one that you had no choice in. God gave us beauty, and he can take it away at anytime.
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

i was also born with a birthmark where hair will never grow, but it’s located at the top right of the back of my head. I was born in 1999 and i’m now 17. Its about the size of a nickel, and sucked when i was younger but as i grow older i forget about it less and less.
I was offered hair growth creams ,shampoos etc. by my doctors my whole life but none ever worked.
I have a bald spot at the bottom right of my head right above my neck where hair grows and I was born with it. I don’t really like it cause people always say you have a bald spot in the back of your head and it makes me mad
Hey all,
It’s funny, I’ve never met someone in person who has a bald spot like mine, so all of you are my instant comrades. Growing up I didn’t pay too much attention to my hair until I was 9 and moved into my aunt and uncle’s apartment along with my judgemental, long lost sister. I guess it was my uncle who noticed it, he must have been drunk because the moment he saw it peeping out from beneath the hairs closest to my forehead, smack dab in the middle, he poked at it and said what the hell is that?? A bald spot?? He busted out laughing like it was the funniest thing he’d ever seen. He was a great guy. So eventually after humiliating school pictures with my hair tied so tightly back (thank you sister) i looked Asian, and everybody noticed not only my buck teeth but also my bald spot My aunt a few years later took me to the doctors. The appointment was not for my poor little friend’s existence but rather a skin rash. My aunt must have been feeling guilty that day and thought she’d help me out by bringing it up. The doctor said i could get that surgery you’re all talking about but I had had two surgeries before and did not want to go under the knife again for something so small. Since then, after feeling like I was sitting in front of a plastic surgeon telling me how I can be more beautiful with just a nip and a tuck, just wanting them to buzz off I’ve grown found of my spot. I show it off to people sometimes if I feel like it. It’s like I have a tiny secret nobody knows about unless you look real hard or I point at it like my uncle. My side part helps too as you may relate, ain’t nobody gotta see my spot all day, and it’s more stylish.
So I was born with this spot on my head and I went to my doctor they never seen anything like it. So I went to a dermatologist and they wanted to do surgery but I was not going to?. They said I have a tumor and mine looks a little dif. But ugh I hate it.
That’s horrible. I’m sorry to hear your have a tumor. Is it benign?
My 5 year old daughter has a small bald spot on her head. She was born with it. If feels kind of soft but not like normal skin would feel. I would love to know if anyone may know what this could be because everything I look up says a disease and I don’t want that to be the outcome for my little girl. Please if anyone has more information on what it might be or where I can look for answers let me know.
Hello,
Im just wondering if anyone has found a name for this yet. Both of my kids were born with one. My son in 2011 his was like an open wound when he was born and closed before we left the hospital. But its only about the size of a nickel now and has a few follicles in it. But wont frow hair. My daughter was born august of 2015 and i jist found hers its no bigger than a pencil eraser around and was never open. If anyone can help me figure out what they are. Their doctors haven’t the slightest clue???
If it’s near the left or right temple area, it’s called triangular alopecia. Some people have follicles there (my son does) and some do not. In the case of follicles, they can do a hair transplant surgery. My son is 15 and I’m trying to wait until he’s done growing to fill it in. I do not want to do the surgery where they cut and pull the sides together. He will have a scar forever. Good luck with both of your kiddos. Oh, there is a new procedure that Bosley told me about , it’s low laser light therapy. Sounds promising too.
My son was born with a bald spot in the middle of the left side of his head. I’ve mentioned to his Dr. several times but she never seems to be concerned. My only worry is him dealing with it cosmetically. I always have his hair cut a little longer so it covers it up, and he just recently noticed it for the first time. I was hoping he’d never notice!
He was a natural birth, but a forceps was needed . . .
How cool to know that I’m not the only person on earth with this issue? Random Google search brought me here. I have a pretty large bald spot with NO follicles on the left side of my head as well; born in Puerto Rico in 1986. I haven’t suffered emotionally so much because of it and I think in part because I am a female and I have enough hair to be able to cover it up and growing up I think it affected my mom much more than it affected me. She had a constant need to point it out and cover it up which I think was based on her own preoccupation with hair considering all the colorism and racism she grew up surrounded by and “hair” being such a big deal in her world and honestly I think it made her feel like a good mommy to feel like she was protecting me and I can appreciate that. At this point I just feel like it’s one of those things that make me unique and I’ve lived with it for so long that at this point I feel no need to alter or fix it. I even show it to people who at first find it so hard to believe it’s there before they see it.
I 2 was born with a bald spot in the US size of a quarter on the right side of my head…I find it so crazy I had 3 boys and none of them had it then got pregnant with my 4th child “my daughter”, she was also born with same bald spot like mine and in the same spot…how crazy life is but one well we r just special!!
i too have the same problem, i am from india and i am very happy to know that i am not the alone one in this planet, doctors said that there are no natural medicines or drugs
that can solve this but i can go for a surgery but i did not bcoz i think its a birth-mark and i think it as a god-gift and all men have something good and something bad , the bad one is this and the good one is my fast brain
I was born without hair at the back of my head.when I fell pregnant it grew back and than eventually after giving birth it went back to baldness again..My hair becomes dry &is very thin &weak..What can I do to grow it?The rest of my hair grows long if I plait it

My daughter was born two months ago. She has a bald spot on the left side of her head. I’m trying to research what that could be. Spot is oval about 30×15 mm in size..
Triangular alopecia. My son has it too. Went to docs only to refer me to someone else. Went to Hans Weimann who says he’s a good candidate for transplants but it’s painful and costs $7000. Hope that helps.
I was bullied in elementary school, I have big bald, some time it looks orange spot at the crown of my head. People always bullied me and some even hate to sit near me. I born in 1976 and till date people hate to see my mark. I am increased my back hair to that area and sometime using black sprey color which hide it temporarily but very messy. This is our luck and fate with which we born and have to face I guess till death. I don’t know may b people laughing at our backs….I don’t know may b we have thousand bullied names. Because of this problem I am always in complex.
I was born in 1963. The bald spot on the upper left side of my scalp was never an issue for me. I have dark thick hair and unless the wind hit my head just right, it wasn’t even visible. I seldom even think about it and if someone sees it and mentions it, I just shrug my shoulders. I was told it was a birthmark but obviously that was just the only explanation they had at the time. Occasionally a watery blister will start to form on the top of it. I have no idea why or what causes this anomaly as there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. Does this happen to anyone else?
I feel a bit better knowing how many people also have a small or big bald spot. I’m 15 and I have s bald spot on the right of my head near the temple.. I recently got a haircut and I got made fun of a little for having a bald spot. It’s not that big, it’s about 1cm diameter. It’s not that noticeable but it still Biggs me and makes me embarrassed. I have to wear my hood so no one can see it but the way I cut my hair makes it noticeable that’s why I don’t really like getting haircuts. Once again I feel kind of better knowing that a lot more people have a bald spot.
I was born with a bald spot right where my widows peak is supposed to be . It looks like a square.
just wanna share my story here.. i’m a 20 y/o boy from malaysia.. i’ve had the bald spot since i was small. when i was in primary, i didnt bother it bcs everyone was small and wasnt so judgmental. but since i got into the secondary school, i always got teased about this bald spot and it was very embarrassing.. until now, im still covering it with my hair. ive never liked going for a haircut since my hair would not cover fully the spot. ive been thinking about marryin the girl i knew so long.. but the question is, what would she do if she sees this bald spot.. would she like leave me…? i dont know how to tell her… but im asking u guys, if u have any solution to cover the spot? i’ve been to the hair treatment centre though but they told me that i couldn’t do anything about it bcs the spot has no root for it to grow..
I was born with a bald spot on the right side of my head. Reportedly my mother was told it was due to me lying on her placenta in utero. I am in my 60’s and have managed to cover the spot over the years. I’ve never shared this with friends but I know. I was teased as a child because it was so obvious, as the hair on that side was thin and short. I wish to wear my hair natural, but have a gaping patch. Any serious suggestions are appreciated. Thank you
I was born with a bald spot on the crown of my head also, about .5 x .5 inches, raised circular bump, flesh colored and soft like a cyst but not a cyst. I was born in 1985 in the US. Had it removed when i was 15 where they excised the bald “bump” and stitched it back together so now there is a small linear scar where no hair grows. It is now much more less noticeable than my bald “bump”. It wasn’t painful; I was just very self conscious about it. Even though I have long black hair, I could not tie my hair certain ways and if my hair was down, it would often peak through my hair. Now I don’t even remember what it was like having it! Best decision ever and luckily at the time it was covered by insurance.
I don’t remember the diagnosis the surgeon said, or if he even told me it, but he did refer to it as a “birthmark” and it can wasn’t dangerous but could be removed for “cosmetic” reasons.
I was born in India (I’m 20) i too have a BLad at my left side head…itz in a circle shape of 1cm radii….i asked my mom about that she told it was a knife mark by doctor’s …but later i knew it was a birth mark i tried my solution for that but i cant …worried a lot bcoz i couldnt cut a one side haircut current trend…later i left it…its not my mistake its a Manufacturing Defect by GOD…!!!
I too was born with a bald spot (bigger than a 25 cent coin)on the left side of my head. I’ve never tried to treat it. It’s been abt 6 years since I started growing my hair and the bald spot Is very unnoticeable. Now I have this urge to cut my hair for future careers. I’m not sure if I’m ready to face this major Insecurity of mines
Iwas born with a bald spot on the back of my head, was born 1964, my mother always told me it was the way she carried me and my head was rubbing on her hip bone.
hi I was also born in 1977,with same boldspot,no hair, bumpy and flaky, hadsal it removed 18april 2017,very painfull still but healing nicely, also born with help of instruments, thanks
left side of head, strange always the left side
I have the same bald spot, left side of my crown, born in 1989. My mom thinks it was caused by forceps during delivery. I went to two different dermatologists. One said it would develop into cancer. The other said it was a hereditary condition. I don’t believe either dermatologist considering I’ve never heard anyone talk about having one until this forum. I was teased as a child but I am able to laugh about it now with close friends and family. It may have been the way we were all lying in the womb, which is very special when you think about it. I do think it’s odd that a lot of us were born the same year, would love to know the connection there.
Have any of your Mom’s mentioned your birth being a difficult one where the doctor used forceps or excessive force?
Get another opinion, Cancer?
I have the same, 2 main patches 5.5cm on the left side of my head. Born 1972. Always been there since birth and never changed in shape or anything, dermatologist at hospital said its congenital (birth mark) and recommended a hair transplant. Book with plastic surgeon. I’ll keep you posted.
Hello everyone, I was born 1982 and I have the same bald spot on the back right side of my head. Everyone in school would laugh and joke about it. When I was 15 they said is would become cancer and had me cut it out. The doctors also said that once I cut it out it would leave a little scar. I agreed to do it and two weeks later the hair just fell out again, so here I am at 35 wearing the same ponytail I’ve been wearing all my life. Like many, I wish I knew how to fix the spot
This can be easily fixed with either a limited hair transplant of scalp micropigmentation ( see here: https://scalpmicropigmentation.com/smp-for-women/)

I was born in 1965 with a bald spot on upper left scalp. It has never changed. My mother checked about hair replacement when I was a child but because I had no hair follicles they could not help. I am now almost 53, and have dealt with it. Never looked into it further tho. Have I gotten teased, absolutely as a child. I am blessed with thick hair. Long hair is a good thing for me. I part it to the right and usually pull some back to cover it if not in pony tail or braids. At times, I do envy those who can just leave their hair without a fuss or worry about the wind seperating it and my bald spot showing or having trendy haircuts and styles. I wish there was an easy way to have what’s left of my life without it, however I keep hearing my mothers words saying “God made you special for a reason”. My final thought, embrace it… learn how to fix your hair to make you feel more comfortable and if anyone is that critical, ignorant or shallow over something you had no control over, they are not worth your time of day people.
You may be special, yet you can still fix this if you want with either a hair transplant on a limited basis or scalpmicropigmentation (see: https://scalpmicropigmentation.com/)
