Wife Losing Hair Daily After Stopping Birth Control 18 Months Ago
My wife has been losing handfuls of hair for about the last year, pretty consistently on a daily basis. About 18 months ago, she stopped using birth control, and we thought that might be the cause. However, now a year later, we don’t know what’s happening. My wife has very dark brown, thick hair, but it has thinned significantly. Some seems to be growing back, but not at the same rate she’s losing hair.
At first, I thought it might be a form of Telogen Effluvium Hair Loss based on what I read about it.
She’s been to a few general practitioners, gynocologist and dermatoligist. None of them have really offered any help. Based on this brief description, a) what do you think the issue could possibly be, b) what kind of doctor should we be looking for that can actually give some answers, c) are there any nutritional steps we can take that would make a difference?
Thanks
I would want to have her hair mapped for miniaturization, because this might tell us if she has genetic hair loss that was precipitated by the birth control pills. Before recommending what to do, I would want to know what her hair looks like in every part of her scalp. Some doctors in the field of hair transplantation will map out her scalp, so look to the ISHRS.org‘s physician search and call some local doctors to ask if they do hair mapping.
I have had the same problems with hair thining and clumps–I mean clumps of hair falling out, ever since I stopped the pill 5 months ago. This makes me sad and depressed that I too cannot find any answers. Let me know if you find anything significant with your wife’s problem. Good luck!!! :)
I think I am having this same problem and I don’t know why it is happening. I stop my birth control 5 months ago after 6 years and I am getting really concern about my recent bald spot that is getting bigger as time passes. Please please post if anyone has any suggestions into what can be the cause for this and what type of doctor should I go to.
Thanks
I took birth control for 10 years and I have the same problem now, it makes me so depressed and it’s scary as I had beautiful hair. My gynecologist’s answer is…Just go back on birth control! Which I did since I’m so desperated..I have been taking it for a month now and it does not stop the hair loss..Please help!
I took birth control from the age of 16, had 2 children in between, and have now stopped for around 5 months, I am now nearly 41.
I have just sat down and counted all the hair I have lost today after washing it.
I only counted hair with a root on not broken hair, and got to 500 for definite and then another pile I rescued from the shower, so approx 600 and not many broken hairs.
I’d like to know what sort of Dr I should approach for this problem as it is really getting me down big time.
I’m 41 and I stopped birth control 6 months ago. I was on birth contol for abour 18 years and three kids later. My hair was very thick and wavy(curly)) my whole life. I cry every time I take a shower. I have handfuls of long hair on my shower floor as well as my house. I would consider my hair considerably thin. My hair dresser even noticed. I use to wear bangs, but no longer. My bangs look to thin. I am very concerned!!! I occasionally drink alcholol((a glass a night) and I have a teen-age daughter. Yes, it’s stressful!!! How can I restore my hair?? My family has no history with hair loss. Should I go back on birth control? I’m so tired of my hair thinning!!! Thank You, DMR
Hello,
I am only 23 and have had the same issues, but I think they come from staring the pill. The pill I was prescribed (Levora) is high in androgen which can cause hair loss. After 10 months after starting the pill, my once VERY thick hair is falling out all over the place.. on my clothes, in my brush, in the shower.. everywhere! I want to cry when I run my fingers through my hair and more strands come out. Help!
NONE of you worry please!!!
Your hair that is falling out is because of your hormones leveling out. I had the same happen and its totally normal to shed a huse amount after stopping birth control. It happened about 3 to 5 months after my discontinued use of the pill. It happend for about 1 year after. I have VERY thin hair to start with and I cried everytime I brushed my hair of took a shower. I couldnt sleep I couldnt focus on ANYTHING but my massive hair shed. It eventually stopped but I know what you all are going through. This can happen if you start the pill as well. I did tons of reasearch on this and if your hormones fluctuate up and down it can cause hair loss- No worries it will grow back
I had been on BCP since I was 19. I’m now 46 and stopped them 5 months ago. I am shedding hair in large amounts, and it makes me sick at my stomach. I was on Nordette which is a high androgen potency BCP. If I would have known what this was doing to my body….I never would’ve have taken it.
I so had the same happen to me. I stopped a year ago and my hair just keeps falling out. I have been looking for an answer and I found something that might help…. It also helps wrinkles…. LOL… So I have been doing this every day, not sure if it will help, but i sure will check back in in about 6 months or so.
http://www.shapeyourface.com Tom’s exercise #5 is supposed to help strengthen roots and make hair more luxurious, this is the side effect. It is supposed to help with wrinkle on the forhead.Soo cool, I am hoping for a miracle. I just started doing this exercise last week and it has helped with wrinkles, but hair it says wait 6-8 months.
