I wrote an extensive article on the combination using FUE and SMP together to increase the value of the hair in a hair transplant here: https://newhair.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Combining_Follicular_Unit_Extraction_and_Scalp.98621.pdf

Im not a huge fan of this look, but I know people with no hair loss who shave the sides of their heads to the skin and then grow out the top a bit. I generally do more of a fade rather than complete shaving, but would consider this look if I don’t have a […]
I’m having an FUE procedure and i’ve seen plenty of people on youtube who are able to rock really short fades, pretty much bald fades after getting one of these procedures done (the haircut where you cut really low on the sides and back and gradually up it a little more), and I was wondering, […]
Hi Doctor, I am thinking about getting a SMP and have some apprehensions. I saw a few of your posts and you seem to be quite upfront and honest about the procedure. I would mean a lot to me if you could please verify some of the information I have been told. The clinic where […]
The pictures only show your over-harvested donor area. If I understand you correctly, you had the FUE with an over-harvested donor area to fix the SMP you had done. The only way to correct the over-harvested donor area is with SMP. Nothing is perfect, but our overall satisfaction for SMP is very high in our […]
If the balding pattern is fully developed would you recommend SMP before a transplant or if it best combined only after the transplant? I prefer the transplant first and then the FUE after some hair has grown out.
Many times the transplant does not provide enough hair to cover an extensive balding pattern because the donor supply density is too low for the high demand of the balding pattern. When that happens, the surgeon who is skillful with both hair transplants and SMP will know how to use the transplants to form a […]
Yes, you can remove the “bad” pigment by using a proper pigment that will not turn bright blue if the scar still shows. Another option is the Q-Switch laser – it removes the blue pigment and will not go deep enough to kill the hairs around the scar.
This patient had visible FUE scars that he wanted to conceal. To accomplish this, we performed Scalp MicroPigmentation on the donor area with great results. FUE is a terrific procedure but it does form many very small scars for each follicular unit that is excised. When too many FUEs are performed the donor area becomes bald and looks […]
There have been patients who have had SMP first then subsequently had FUE with the ARTAS with no issue.
You can have Scalp MicroPigment (SMP) to the linear strip scar first if you are thinking of shaving. Then the scar will not be as noticeable with the hair shaved and FUE can be performed. The time between SMP and FUE can be about one week (after your last SMP session). Keep in mind FUE […]
Scars treated with FUE or in fact with any form of hair transplant, does not completely cover the scar area because the density needed is too high to achieve in one session or possibly even two sessions. The scars tend to be white, and the whitish color of the scar seems to always dominate whatever […]
Since we have been performing Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP), there have been various clinics that started offering something like SMP, but with non-permanent ink. Non-permanent ink is just like makeup or just drawing something on your head with a pen, in my opinion, so you don’t have to worry about other procedures (it will erase off […]
Generally speaking, you should wait at minimum 2 to 3 months until the area has healed. Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP) would not affect hair growth or hair loss.
Follicular unit extraction (FUE) and Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP) can work very well together, but you can’t have the two procedures done on the same day. I generally recommend having the SMP and FUE procedures done 6 months apart.
