Doc, how many months would you say if I went on finasteride? Is it needed for a very miniaturized hair to return to its original thick shaft diameter? Thank you. That varies between people and the aggressiveness of the balding process. In some men, I have seen plucked hairs indicate that the new growth occurred […]

Compared to the pictures from past months, my hair looks improved a bit (I mean really a bit). But I still see short, miniaturized hair fall. My medication history: 10 months on fin 1mg, 5 months on dut 0.5mg, 4 months on oral minoxidil 5mg. Why do the miniaturized hairs remain? Just because you are […]
The miniaturization doesn’t exceed 20%, which is, therefore, by definition, normal or marginal. To be exact, repeat the photo with the hairs cut short against the scalp so that an accurate count can be made. Vary the location as well so we will be looking at more than one place. Also map it against a […]
This is a 26 year/old male who was concerned about balding, especially recession in the two corners of his hairline. This man has a very large and strong forelock. It takes over a good 70-80% of his hairline, and in the center, it is located where it was when he was 10 years old. Many […]
Miniaturization studies help to confirm a person’s expected balding pattern. But let’s say a person is assessed for miniaturization and their hair is miniaturized in a Norwood 3 pattern, how do you know that additional hair beyond the already miniaturized zones won’t also start to miniaturize down the road resulting in an even higher Norwood […]
Advanced miniaturization is when more than 70% of the hairs in a particular area have more than 70% reduction of hair shaft diameter.
From what I’ve seen, it seems like hair miniaturization progresses over several hair cycles and happens after a hair sheds. Is this the only way that it can occur? I have semi-long hair and I’ve noticed that the hair I shed appears to get thinner over time, as in it tapers from thick to thin towards […]
I’ve never heard about AGA without miniaturization and with permanent telogen. How it’s even possible, what’s the underlying mechanism? Some researchers believe that starting off the anagen cycle may be part of the AGA problem. Some men who go into telogen and catagen just don’t then pick up their anagen cycle. This will produce hair loss […]
Dr: Does shampooing daily affect miniaturized hairs? Should be reduce the frequency of shampooing and let the hairs become thick with the help of min & fin? Shampooing does not impact miniaturization.
Is it true that once a hair miniaturizes 50% in diameter, it can no longer be saved by potential treatment? I don’t know that 50% miniaturization can’t be reversed. I suspect that there is some degree of miniaturization that can’t be reversed but I would suspect it is in the 80-90% range.
Can hair start to grow thicker in the current cycle? Yes, I have seen men grow their hair out and then bring some strands. They can clearly see the hairs at the base of thicker than the hairs at the end showing the miniaturization can be reduced within a single anagen cycle
Can “end stage” miniaturized hairs be salvaged with medication such as Finasteride/Dutasteride/Minoxidil. Or are those a lost cause once they reach that stage? We tend to look at these hairs as lost causes; however, microneedling may have changed that perspective. We don’t really know as proper research has not been done. I have seen finasteride […]
I have been thinning slowly on the top of my head for about 7 years or more. I am guessing that the hairs that started to minituarize 7 years ago are too late to reverse and make strong again with finasteride? But the hairs that started to miniaturize say 2 years ago there can be […]
Look at the video in my post. The HAIRCHECK test ( https://baldingblog.com/haircheck-test-how-it-is-done-video/) measures hair bulk (the sum of the thickness of each hair and the number of hairs per square inch). Hair loss is a bulk issue and when we lose hair we lose hair bulk.
By the normal 20% or below miniaturization, does this include long terminal hairs that are thinner than normal ones? Dr. Parsa Mohebi refers to this normal level of miniaturization as “recycling follicles” so these normally cycling miniaturized hairs come back as normal terminal ones eventually? Miniaturized hairs generally don’t grow as long as normal terminal […]
