I think that there is no miniaturization in my hair but the hair seems to be sparsely separated. Could that be true? Hair grows in bundles called follicular units containing from 1-4 hairs each. When some people lose hair, the lose hairs within the follicular unit occurs so a three hair follicular unit might lose […]

Is hair miniaturization a sure sign of male pattern baldness? Is there any other possible causes of hair miniaturization on the hairline and all over the head or is mpb the only thing to cause these symptoms Miniaturization is the stage that the hair shafts go through as they are progressively lost with genetic balding. […]
The average head has up to 20% of the hairs miniaturized in the donor area and even in a non-balding man; however, in the balding area, I would expect to see a lot more miniaturization in the process of your losing your hair. Please send me microscopic views of your hair mapped against your head […]
Is hair miniaturization always male pattern baldness? Mostly miniaturization indicates hair loss is probably genetic in both men and women.
I have thinning and recession at the temples and slight thinning at the crown (22 male). This was confirmed under a digital scope. Is it possibly that this process will naturally stop and not progress much further? My father’s hair thinned in his 20s and receded at the temples but seemed to have halted. Same […]
I still dont know if my hairline is maturing or if I’m balding. I wanted to know if hairline maturation occurred via miniaturization of the follicles? Not always. Sometimes hairlines just recede without miniaturization. A mature hairline is located in the middle just one finger width above the highest crease of your furrowed brow with […]
My hair stopped shedding about 6 months ago. When I’m in the shower now I get maybe 1-3 hairs on my hands between shampooing and conditioning. However, my hair definitely looks thinner at the crown and temples than it did a year ago. My question is: Even though I’m not shedding, can the miniaturization process […]
They use an instrument called a dermoscope (trichoscope)! It looks at the hair with 50 times magnification. This view shows the value of the instrument, especially when combined with the experience of the person using it. Below is a picture of a patient with alopecia areata showing blunted exclamation mark hairs (black arrows) which makes […]

These double swirls are not common and from a surgeons prospective, when I transplant such a crown I must follow the double swirl to make the hair reconstruction look normal.
No, what you are seeing is normal thickness ‘terminal’ hairs. The small hairs are vellus hairs and they are normally present in high numbers.
How do you know this? Any evidence you can provide? Anecdotally on Reddit and hair forums – you read hundreds of posts of people “sprouting new mini hairs” (ie at the hairline), after starting finasteride, minoxidil, and more recently – dermarolling. These hairs may not necessarily be fully miniaturized – but they certainly are thinner […]
I own a digital microscope and while there is miniaturization in the donor zone it’s not past the 20% threshold, yet at least, I would think the current pattern tends to point towards diffuse patterned alopecia. If I can bother you again, what I do want to know since information is somewhat scarce on the […]
I have examined many of my patients over decades who have had miniaturized hair, went on finasteride, and then reversed the miniaturization.
I am 23. For the past 5 months I have been suffering from hair shedding, itchy and flaky scalp, and growing spots of thinning in my crown area. I believe it is due to MPB. Prior to this, I never noticed any hair loss and no one in the family has experienced hair loss except […]
