Is Hair Normally Thinner Towards the Root?
Is it normal for a hair under an inch long to be noticably thinner towards the root? i see hairs that fall out that look kinda like an exclamation mark, thick at top and thin at the root. my hair is around 2cm long.
The exclamation point hair you’re describing usually points to a variety of conditions, such as allergic disorders, thyroid disease, vitiligo, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and ulcerative colitis (see Exclamation point hair). Normally hair is uniform in width.

Hi i am a 19 year old male i am wondering is it normal for a hair to be noticibly thinner towards the root. i see thick at the top of the hair strand and thin at the root which is concerning , also i have some very thin hair while others are thicker on my scalp where they seem to be curly as well. i would also add that i have been losing hair for the past year where the amount of hair has reduced more than 50% on top and even on the sides and back, but this has been accompanied by scalp pain where my scalp on top of my head is inflamed and hurts a lot even when stroking the hair, and some spots appear all over the scalp. My scalp also itches quite a lot and cuases me discomfort. i would really like your advice on what this may mean i have been to the dermortologist and they say its male pattern baldness but i have also visited the institute of tricologist in london by they say its not male pattern diffuse baldness as i am also losing hair on the sides but they do not seem to give me anything for the scalp pain that cuases me discomfort for the past year and this has made living very diffucult as the discomport increase and decrease throughout the day and even keeps me awake at night. sorry for the long message but would really like some good advice.

I have also had the same thing. Hair noticeably thinned out on the same strand of hair. There is an Intense scalp itch and well as pain. Pain usually after showers/shampooing. One time one half of my head hurt with the slightest touch of the hair. I have been getting weird tangles and balls of hair. Texture and hair color change. One side of my head has a huge density loss but now the other side is catching up. Again huge chunks and balls of tangles hair are coming out and my hair sticks together and tangles (especially at the ends). My hair is like a spider web or silk. Though it seems strong it is miniaturizing. It is very odd considering my hair was beautiful just a year ago.
