Finasteride is not important for getting FUE grafts to survive. Finasteride prevents shock loss of the miniaturized hairs on your head, which is common in men in their 20s who often have a great number of miniaturized hairs.

26 y.o., I’m Norwood 2~3 with slight vertex loss. I’ve been on Fin for nearly 4 years and, as far as I can tell, it completely halted my hair loss. I don’t think I grew back any hair and it didn’t do a thing for my shedding for some reason, which I still have heaps, […]
Been to two different consultations now and want to decide between FUT and FUE. Both surgeons I spoke to didnt have a big preference between the two, which I was surprised by. They mentioned that with a skilled surgeon FUT scar shouldn’t be visible, as long as you care for it properly. The cost difference […]
June 10th marks 6 months since my 1200 FUE graft HT on my temples (lowered hairline as well slightly). The transplant hair is growing in slowly but surely. Unfortunately, I have significant shock loss on my native hair surrounding the transplant hair. Much of this has not grown back yet. Specifically, I have shock loss […]
I have a few questions about getting a hair transplant as a 26 year old. Before I get the “just go bald” comments, I’m not gonna do that, so save your breathe. Call me vain or whatever. Anyway, I’m currently on finasteride, but I started after my temples had already receded and my hairline is […]
Your age has a lot to do with the drug decision. IF you are over 35, drugs are less important to hold on to your existing hair with a hair transplant. If you are 26, the existing hair is under threat of loss if your pattern is more advanced and you have not lost the […]
From Reddit: So, I recently did a AMA on hair transplant, answered many questions and reacted to several people’s stories. I want to make something clear to everybody interested in or planning a HT. Fin is mandatory. Unless you just want to correct a shitty natural hairline and have solid reasons to believe you have no […]
Finasteride usually prevents shock loss which is a loss of native hair that is in the process of miniaturizing. The older you are, the less the risk. Men in their 20s are at the greatest risk, less in their 30s and so on. The decision to take finasteride is a decision to protect native hair.
This appears to be a disease called Alpecia Areata and although it may have been induced by the hairline reduction, it is not shock loss and is best treated by a dermatologist?
I’m getting an FUT procedure done next week. I’m excited and a little nervous. I’m 29. Still have some hair left on top of head. But my temples are completely bald. Can someone share their experience? Was it worth the effort and money? After how long did you see the results? Any shock loss of existing […]
Well you should never have had a transplant that young especially with this much hair loss. Any good doctor would never do this because the potential for you to keep going bald is too high. In other words, you only have 6000-7000 transplantable grafts total. You may not have grafts to cover future loss later. […]
And what are your patient’s experience with Finasteride regarding negative side effects? For the young man who has a risk of shock loss after a hair transplant (a loss of native hair), finasteride can prevent this. Most men don’t have sexual side effect (risk for sexual side effects is under 4%)
I was advised by a dermatologist NOT to have a hair transplant because of the reasons mentioned above: shock loss and possible acceleration of hair loss. If the reader is over 26 and is willing to take the drug finasteride, the risk of acceleration of the hair loss and shock loss are mitigated.
Your donor area may be over-harvested reflecting that either the FUEs were taken too close to each other for the density of the area, the punch was too large or your donor area could not support the number of FUE grafts you received. It is possible that the donor area is undergoing vascular shock loss. If […]
ANSWER TO THE QUESTIONS BELOW: At the age of 38, you are certainly old enough to get a hair transplant. If you are really a Class 2, then it might mean that you are not balding but have been developing mature hairline. A good picture will go a long way for me to see what […]
