Seborrheic dermatitis is more commonly known as dandruff… and no, dandruff does not cause permanent hair loss. I suppose if you scratch your scalp and pull on your hair enough it can cause patchy hair loss. Your dandruff and your hair loss are most likely unrelated though, particularly if you’re experiencing patterned loss. The gene […]
Seborrheic dermatitis causes scaly, itchy, red skin and dandruff. It is a skin condition. It is not a hair condition. Telogen effluvium is diffuse hair shedding which is triggered by some form of stress that makes the hair go into the shedding (telogen) cycle. Hairs usually grow back in 6 to 12 months. I suppose […]
Your doctor should’ve given you application instructions, but I generally tell my patients that 3 or 4 treatments 12 hours apart is my usual limit for topical steroids. Seborrhea is produced by overactive skin proliferation which, like psoriasis, responds to steroids on the schedule I just reported. I do not know more than that for […]
There appears to be an association between yeast and seborrheic dermatitis. There’s a great article on the American Academy of Family Physicians website that says: “Pityrosporum ovale, a lipophilic yeast of the Malassezia genus, has been implicated in the development of this condition. It has been suggested that seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory response to […]
Seborrheic dermatitis should not impact hair growth from a hair transplant. Scars can be judged by their width, and scars that are greater than 3mm may cause a problem. The pink color is usually gone in less than 6 months, but it can be delayed. The pink color has really more to do with the […]
Your doctor probably prescribed fluocinolone acetonide, which works in the treatment of dandruff. Some people need a shampoo that will treat dandruff, so certain shampoos may contain zinc pyrithione, which is active for such problems. The shampoos will generally state on the packaging if they are recommended for people with dandruff. Other ingredients routinely included […]
Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) does not cause hair loss unless you scratch it. Sometimes the treatment may impact the hair. Cocois Coconut Oil Compound contains contains coal tar, salicylic acid, and precipitated sulphur. These types of treatments are usually used for advanced SD and psoriasis, but they are not as effective as steroids when they are […]
I really couldn’t tell you what you have without an examination, but psoriasis may start off with red areas on the skin leading to flaking and eruptions. These red areas, when they impact the scalp that is covered by hair, may not show up well. There is a fine line in the diagnosis between seborrhea […]
The chronic use of strong topical steroids (such as clobetasol) will cause hair loss. I wonder if your have psoriasis instead of sebborheic dermatitis, as that is what it sounds like to me, so ask your dermatologist about psoriasis. What you are asking me here is to render an opinion on your care for your […]
Clobex is a powerful steroid and should not be taken for prolonged periods of time. This can cause hair loss as well and it will not be a permanent solution to seborrheic dermatitis unless you keep taking it. It is a double edged sword, so use it cautiously and temporarily.
If you let it build hard plaques on the scalp and then you pick them off, it can cause hair loss. Just flaking scalp does not cause hair loss, though. An extreme example of seborrheic dermatitis is the disease called psoriasis, which does not cause hair loss unless the victim picks off the plaques on […]
My response to such questions requires a face-to-face meeting and an examination. The practice of medicine is an art form that caring doctors in the ‘hair’ field base their views on such issues as yours after a direct examination of the hair and scalp. Nizoral should not be abused and should always be taken as […]
Seborrheic dermatitis, when scratched continuously, can cause traction hair loss. Seborrheic dermatitis does not cause hair loss by itself. Whatever pain or feeling you are having on your scalp needs to be evaluated by a good dermatologist. If you don’t get the answers with one doctor, get another opinion.
If you have telogen effluvium, it has nothing to do with seborrheic dermatitis. You should see a good dermatologist to make the diagnosis of TE.
