“I seemed to respond well to rogaine and I’m wondering how long my hair will stay where it is now? I’m very nervous about using fin because of possible sides but am considering adding Nizoral a couple times a week as well. If I responded well to Rogain and continue with regular application do you […]

Hard water just means it has higher mineral content in general. It does not cause or accelerate hair loss as far a I am concerned. If you think it is affecting your hair, you can always try soft water. But I personally do not see its benefit with respect to genetic hair loss, more of […]
I think that the trichologist should be the one to speak with for questions #1 and #2. I don’t know why those recommendations were made. Finasteride and/or minoxidil will not help your seborrheic dermatitis. If you have hair loss issues and want and medical treatment or assessment, you should see a physician. From a medical […]
Picking at your scalp and/or hair causes traction alopecia. In some people, the picking gets so severe that a name to describe the process is worthy for your review — dermatillomania. I’m not about to diagnose you with this disorder over the web, but the hair could become permanently lost if you continue to pick […]
I have a hard time believing that you can’t get straight answers from doctors, particularly the doctor that prescribed you the corticosteroid. There is a well known connection between exogenous steroids and hair loss where the drug triggers genetic predispositions to balding. I can not tell you how long this might go on, as this […]
1. Dandruff doesn’t cause permanent hair loss. It is a skin issue. 2. See above answer. If you’re constantly scratching your scalp or brushing out the dandruff, it’s possible you could be causing hair loss. 3. Efficacy or safety of topical cortisone is something that is a doctor/patient issue. Sometimes the use of steroids can […]
If you’re using a camera with a bright flash, you’re probably going to see more scalp. The same applies to harsh lighting, which routinely makes your hair appear thinner. I can not tell you what is better. A camera gives you other people’s view, but make sure that the lighting does not distort what you […]
Hair dye is the only sure way to control graying hair. I doubt your shampoo is changing your hair color. And although it’s been thought of to be related, there’s no clear scientific connection between stress and graying. Read more about that at Scientific American.
Snippet from the study abstract: Read the rest — Hair care practices and their association with scalp and hair disorders in African American girls. 201 surveys were sent out to caregivers of African American girls aged 1 to 15 years to look for links between traction alopecia, ringworm, and seborrheic dermatitis. Almost all of the […]
I really couldn’t make an attempt at an answer to what you are asking without examining you myself. So I’m not sure what it could be. If it is indeed seborrheic dermatitis, treatments are usually limited to antifungal shampoos. You didn’t mention which meds you were prescribed, so I’m kind of at a loss there, […]
Thank you for your story and experience. I’m not suggesting fish oil supplements will work for everyone that is seeing eyebrow hair loss, but your advice may help others and the risks are very low in trying it.
I really cannot give you a diagnosis. But personally, if I have white bumps and raised skin flakes that peel off on my scalp with drastic hair loss that is causing me to go completely bald, I would go see a doctor as fast as I could. Maybe you have seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, a fungal […]
As I’ve written before, the sebum/DHT connection is not supported by science. Propecia will not stop oil or sebum production. Too much oil is best treated with more frequent washing and using shampoos that are specifically designed for oily hair (see labels). The use of steroids (betamethasone, clobetasol propionate) is something I tend to stay […]
The best way to get your DHT blood levels is to have your doctor send your blood to a lab that can do this test. Testosterone is broken down to DHT by an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase type 2. Miniaturization can be caused not only from genetic hair loss, but also it can be found in […]
There is a ketoconazole oral, but it has huge warnings about liver problems that can sometimes be fatal. That being said, ketoconazole is an antifungal medication… and to treat seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff), you would probably be better off with a shampoo.
