I’m going to reference a couple patients found on our SMP Photo Gallery and explain why the results are so different and so obvious… Patient 20 is the ideal patient result with a scar from a previous hair transplant. The scar was flat and uniform and was the result of a single surgical procedure with […]

This patient had one Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP) treatment on his hair transplant scar. The AFTER video was taken immediately after SMP, so you can see some redness on the scalp, which will go away in a day or two. In general, SMP to a scalp scar takes two to three sessions. The patient above […]
Since we have been performing Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP), there have been various clinics that started offering something like SMP, but with non-permanent ink. Non-permanent ink is just like makeup or just drawing something on your head with a pen, in my opinion, so you don’t have to worry about other procedures (it will erase off […]
If you look at our
Generally speaking, you should wait at minimum 2 to 3 months until the area has healed. Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP) would not affect hair growth or hair loss.
The pigments have their limitations, but are particularly good for men who want their hair shaved to almost scalp level (closely cropped). You are correct that as you gray, the pigment may produce problems, but usually these pigments gray a bit anyway. I would have to see you, at least see the pictures of your […]
This is a Norwood 6 patient who had a hair transplant done at a clinic in Europe in the 1990s with the old pluggy technique. He wanted to shave his head, but the old hair transplant donor scar and the visible plugs were a problem for him. This patient chose a combination of (1) SMP […]
Generally, scarring alopecia with balding from it does well with Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP). We have done a few severe cases which I could show you if you visited my office. One particular patient who had very extensive scarring and balding would rather not have his photos online.
In general terms, Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP) is a great method to disguise scarring from previous surgeries on the scalp, but you would need to keep your hair shaved. Another option would be a hair transplant to disguise the scars. A consultation would be best at this point so we can see what you’re dealing with […]
In all likelihood, you would be a great candidate for Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP), because hair transplantation is definitely not an option for men with scarring alopecia. SMP is also great for people with alopecia areata or alopecia totalis. See here for FAQ and more information about SMP.
This patient came into the office with a widened scar from a hair transplant we did over a year ago. The photo at the lower left is following his second transplant procedure (the first was with another doctor). The widened scar risk increases with each additional procedure. Only the central 2 1/2 inch portion of […]
I’m four months postop and I’ll be honest I was a little embarrassed to get a haircut because of the scar but now I’m just embracing it. I’d rather have a visible star in the back of my head then no hair on top. The scar can be concealed with SMP or just let your […]
Hi Dr. I’m a diffuse thinner. I have been doing microneedling with minoxidil for about a year. It seems to have stopped the hair loss but unfortunately there is no new growth. I’m thinking about getting smp, the only reason that’s holding me back is that if I get smp I’m scared I wont be […]
I came across a paper of yours with combining SMP and FUE. I think it’s a remarkable idea and it’s something I’m interested in doing. I had an FUE transplant completed with HLC last September (5 months ago). Do you know when is the earliest I could safely do SMP for both the recipient and […]
I’m planning to get scalp micropigmentation SMP on my FUE scars soon. I currently use minoxidil foam which is essentially just minoxidil dissolved in pure ethanol. Does ethanol applied to the skin longterm cause significant fading or blurring of the SMP dots? The use of alcohol based lotions should be avoided for only the first […]
