No one really knows how to take Avodart (dutasteride) for treating hair loss, but most doctors (for reasons I do not understand) recommend daily doses. The long half life is reason enough to take it less often than daily, but I am not an expert on it and the proper dose hasn’t been published yet. […]

I don’t know what you will notice by missing Avodart (dutasteride) for one week. I do know missing Propecia (finasteride) for one week will be almost no issue. Perhaps your physician might know better, since he/she prescribed it. You’ve been on the medication for half a decade so I’m sure the following isn’t news to […]
Avodart (dutasteride) is possibly more effective for some men, but at what cost? Not only has dosage not been defined for treating hair loss and the side effect risks may be greater, but clinical trials aren’t even complete. Remember, Propecia is FDA approved to treat hair loss… Avodart is not. As a physician, it is […]
A recently published study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology shows that in a 6 month limited span, 0.5mg dutasteride (commonly known as Avodart) was shown to be effective at treating hair loss in men aged 18-49 years. Now we have known for some time that this drug is effective, but I’m […]
This is the first FDA safety probe relating to either Propecia (finasteride) or Avodart (dutasteride) that I’m aware of, and it is looking into a link between male breast cancer and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. Any FDA probe certainly is in the best interest of the public, but as the article points out, “Merck spokeswoman Pam […]
Thank you for sharing your story. Sex vs hair… it’s a tough choice for some men! Granted, many men that take Avodart (dutasteride) likely won’t see the severe effects like you saw, but until the medication and its risks are fully studied I can do not advocate the use of Avodart in my practice. It’s […]
That’s an interesting question. I do not know for sure, but I suppose in theory the catch-up hair loss with Avodart (dutasteride) may take a bit longer considering the long half life.
I really do not have a clear answer to your situation. In general, Propecia or Avodart will not be as effective on your front and temple areas. They each work best on the top/crown areas of your scalp. I do not know if you will have more or less shedding as everyone has different results, […]
Shedding occurs when the hair cycle is impacted. In your case, Avodart (dutasteride) may have caused the shedding, but it should be very short term — less than 3 months or so is my guess.
When switching from Propecia (finasteride) to Avodart (dutasteride), I wouldn’t think that any waiting period is needed. I’m not sure how informed your decision in switching medications is since dosing information hasn’t been established when taking Avodart to treat hair loss, but since both are prescription medications I’d hope these are things you and your […]
Sometimes its hard to decipher research and its conclusions especially when there is controversy. The news you are referring to is from a recently published study in the April 2010 New England Journal of Medicine (a respected medical journal). Its conclusion was, “Over the course of the 4-year study period, dutasteride reduced the risk of […]
No, you should not just assume that by taking more of any medication you will have better results. For starters, Avodart (dutasteride) has not been approved for treating hair loss. It is an FDA approved prostate medication, and although early studies show it does work to treat hair loss, it has a much longer half-life […]
There is no drug in the world (yet) that completely stops hair loss. Avodart and Propecia work in similar ways (the two drugs are not drastically different in the mechanism of action) although there are reports that Avodart is better at stopping hair loss, particularly when Propecia benefits have been exhausted. I personally have not […]
A recent publication in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that Avodart (dutasteride) reduces the risk of prostate cancer along the same lines as finasteride did in earlier studies. The study also shows that in those men on Avodart, there was an increased incidence of heart failure. Here’s a snippet from the Associated Press […]
You need a doctor to guide you in a direction here, and your prescribing doctor is the one to go to. I would probably suggest that you just discontinue the drug, maybe switch to finasteride in very low doses, but I am not your doctor. I don’t have experience with using tamoxifen as a treatment, […]
