I generally do not recommend Avodart (dutasteride), and so I really don’t have any experience with patients that use it to protect against shock loss following a hair transplant. In theory it should protect against shock loss similar to how Propecia does.

Few men will complain of an increased libido or an increase in the frequency of erections. As you noted that the increase in erection function has been now two years since you started it, I would imagine that it will continue. How do you know your testosterone levels increased? Did you have them measured before […]
Taking Avodart (dutasteride) for a man over 55 years old and not concerned about fathering more children is a reasonable approach. I have heard from the transplant physician community that when hair loss is not stopped with Propecia, the use of Avodart may help. I am curious about the loss of your transplanted hair, however. […]
This is a situation where you are asking for medical advice, but I’m sorry, this isn’t something I can answer. You can take anything, but taking medications recommended by your doctor will be part of your medical plan for health.
The answer you’re referencing is something I wrote way, way back in February 2006, before official trials for using Avodart as a hair loss treatment took place. I’ll know much more about Avodart after the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons (ISHRS) meeting next month in Amsterdam and will post what I find on the […]
Check with your doctor. The half life of this drug is about 3-4 months, which means it may hang around for a couple of years at some level in your blood stream. Dutasteride (Avodart) is known to produce sexual development problems in the first trimester of pregnancy when taken by women.
As far as I’m aware, results from the 6 month clinical trials in Korea have yet to be made public, so I don’t know what risks were revealed. It is a phase 3 study, so I assume that means they want the drug to go to market as a hair loss treatment. The phase 1 […]
The few times I’ve prescribed 0.5mg of Avodart (dutasteride) for off-label use in treating hair loss, it has been successful but I must tell you that I did not do this with a research minded scientific approach. I didn’t see any substantial regrowth, but essentially the drug ceased further loss in patients that saw their […]
Avodart (dutasteride) does stay in your system for several weeks (5 weeks are reported for half of the drug to disappear from your system). In other words, if you take Avodart today only, half of the drug will be in your body in 5 weeks. In fact, the drug will still be detectable in your […]
You are desperate and experimenting with your body. There are limitations of medical science and you need to accept you are losing hair. Taking a high dose of Propecia (finasteride) will not cause more hair growth. Taking a high dose of Avodart (dutasteride) may not cause more hair growth either. We just don’t know, and […]
You need to speak to your doctor before starting or stopping any medication. So first have this discussion with the doctor that has been prescribing you Propecia. I hate the idea that people are taking my words and using that as if is is a substitution for their physician, so please consider this a disclaimer […]
You sound like you’re trying to be your own doctor and have drawn conclusions that may not be correct. You should approach this process like a clinical scientist and get your hair mapped out for miniaturization and then have a doctor work with you on drugs or anything you need, producing a treatment plan that […]
It sounds like you are buying these drugs on your own without being followed by a doctor. There is a reason why these medications require a prescription from a doctor. In general, Propecia should not raise your testosterone levels to a significant amount over the long term, but testosterone levels have been found to be […]
Although it does sound unusual, I can not explain what you experienced with the switch to Avodart (dutasteride). I have no real experience with Avodart and only know what I read. There were clinical trials conducted in Korea for dutasteride to treat hair loss, but I’ve yet to see them published. At this time, Propecia […]
I don’t know the long term impact of dutasteride (Avodart). There are reports on sexual fertility being reduced on that drug in young men. Ask your doctor about the this side effect. As dutasteride is not FDA approved for treating hair loss, I would suggest that you just stick to the finasteride rather than take […]
