I believe that improvement while taking finasteride has been reported for as long as 24 months. Shock loss is often protected by finasteride… so as long as you stay on the medication, having a hair transplant should not produce shock loss.

My suggestion would be to gather as much information about the status of hair loss that you may have. A hair bulk analysis is the best and most sensitive way to evaluate genetic balding. Considering that you have been worrying about this for at least 8 years, if you would have any balding or thinning […]
There’s no way to tell if you will be bald simply based on your race… mixed or otherwise. Even with a family history, it is never truly clear. It’s possible that the balding gene exists somewhere in your mother’s family tree, too (and it can skip generations). The best thing to do is to go […]
If you are medical intern you should know to look up these types of questions on PubMed. I have yet to come across any studies or valid reports that taking finasteride will impair cognition. There is a study that suggests finasteride can inhibit hippocampal neurogenesis in mice, but there’s another study that say sleep deprivation […]
I wouldn’t expect facial features and hair loss to have relation. You can get tested for the balding genes with HairDX and that will give you an idea if you are carrying the gene for balding. It won’t tell you if that gene will express itself (or to what degree, or when)… but it’s something […]
There is a test called HairDX that will tell you if you have the gene (70% accurate), but it won’t tell you when that gene will be expressed… or if it will be expressed at all. So on a predictive basis, the answer is unfortunately no. But if you want to know if you are […]
As you suggested, there are many causes of hair loss that are not DHT related. I have no way to know the reasons for your hair loss, though. That being said, there are patients with genetic hair loss that just do not respond to Propecia and this can be tested for with the HairDX Finasteride […]
There is no way to easily tell if you’ll develop the balding pattern your male relatives showed around your same age. You can have the HairDX test done and get an idea if you have the genes for balding, or you can see us and get a hair bulk assessment yearly to show when and […]
Response by Dr. Sharon Keene: As chief medical officer for Dermagenoma, a company which manufactures and distributes a genetic test for androgen sensitivity, my esteemed colleague, Dr. Bill Rassman, asked if I would like to comment on the blog regarding the association between serum testosterone, DHT and hair loss especially as it applies to aging. […]
Sure thing. We wrote about it last October — here. One of the HairDX genetic tests will screen women for the connection between their hair loss with respect to an androgenic cause and the treatment options available to them. Women who show a high sensitivity to androgens could benefit from drugs like finasteride (Propecia), although […]
Genetic hair loss will likely be visible somewhere in your family tree, but I really cannot give you a definitive way to predict if you have the hair loss gene just by looking at your family members. The best way to know is look in the mirror… or see a doctor for a miniaturization study […]
A healthy vegetarian diet shouldn’t contribute to hair loss, but if you’re lacking dietary vitamins you might see some thinning. There’s a genetic test called HairDX that I believe is up to 70% accurate. But just because you have the gene doesn’t mean you’ll express the gene. There are only 2 treatments that are FDA […]
Taking hair loss medications now could end up backfiring, so there’s really nothing preventative you should be doing if you don’t see any hair loss. The genes can skip generations, meaning you might not experience any thinning. It’s not uncommon for one child to have visible hair loss while another has a healthy head of […]
In the U.S. generic finasteride is only legally sold in a 5mg dose due to patent laws, so the pill must be cut into pieces to get close to the proper dosing found in the 1mg Propecia. Aside from the difference in size (1mg to 5mg), generic finasteride has the exact same active medication as […]
All tests have flaws with a margin of error. There is no completely perfect, 100% accurate test. The genetic balding test like HairDX gives you a probability score, not a blanket YES or NO answer. It is not an industry standard, because any good physician can diagnose MPB without a blood test. I don’t have […]
